squeeky success,what to do?

i let go alt belt,everything is quiet.then i let go power steering,with alt belt hooked up,still squeeled
on that belt there is alt,water-pump and crank pulley.
i done all this:
new alt belt,tried two of them,tightened more,more
new alt
belt dressing
still @$*&ing squeeks
i even gave the guy who rebuilds alt,s a hard time thinking it was a bad bearing.after looking into on my own,i don,t think so.
i,m lead to believe from what i read here i need a new crank pulley. yes? or no? i,ve also noted the non success of doing this sometimes.i also noted the harmonic balancer may need replacing?
what do i do next?

Are you sure it's the accessory belts that are squealing? If so, and you've tried all of that, telling the mechanic who suggests it may be the bearings, that you don't think so probably isn't the smartest thing. Especially since the problem persists.

For clairification, the Crank Pulley is the same as the Harmonic Balancer.

A common cause of belt squeal on the 4g63 motors is the Harmonic balancer though. However when this is the cause, the squeal is usually primarily on a cold start up. Not to mention, caused by the pulley separating itself. Also, do you have power steering? I couldn't tell by the way you worded the second sentance.

I JUST had the same problem twice. Today I changed my belt after having it rip apart on the bridge.

What brand belts are you using? I used the cheap Strauss belt and they are TERRIBLE. They will squeal all the time and eventually tear. Try to get yourself AC Delco belts or go to Auto Zone and get the Duralast belt. They are "Alright" but are 100x better than the Straius Brand (What the hell was I thinking when I bought it?!)

When your tightening the Alternator and Powersteering pump make sure you unbolt the bolts on the left so you can get the pump and alt to move foward and back easier.

Before you put the belts on, clean the pulleys and clean the area around them. In my case I had a massive build up of grim that actually extended to the pulleys. That will touch the belts and get underneath them. Break out the simple green and clean the area first and rinse it with water. (be careful not to go past the pulley and into the alternator itself with the fluids. It wouldn't also hurt to unplug the battery while your doing this because my wrench touched something while I was doing this and I remember seeing a spark and the wrench flew out of my hand and into the hood. )

Then install and tighten them properly.

just to clarify.
i gave the "mechanic" a hard time after the fact i gave him $160 bucks for a rebuilt alt.(just to note my old one still worked fine,i thought it had a bad bearing,and that was the cause of the squeel)installedthe new one and still had squeel.i was lead to believe the bearings were not part of a rebuild,and thats why i gave him a hard time,they were.i inspected after the fact thinking it was still the alt.i now know thats not the case,the alt is ok.aswell the second belt was installed after the i cleaned the pulleys with brake cleaner.this was just a waste of time and expense,about $30 bucks,still squeeled! i then added belt dressing,anouther waste of cash!
thirdly i did run the car without power steering just to trouble shoot the squeel.belt on,squeel,belt off,squeel.not the power steering then.all was left was water pump and crank pulley.the cars temp is fine, spins free,bearing seems fine.so i never thought the problem would be there.
my next step is to install crank pulley,i,m sure its a hell of alot easier than the water pump which will come next if problem persists.i hope to get it at the pulley,not fussey going back in under them timing covers.once was enough(read profile to learn more(he!he!)....).

well,well,well,
after months of endless trips to the automotive store................i fixed the problem!
i easily purchased 12 alt belts,between snapping,fraying,stretching,or just being contaminated with belt dressing crap,not to mention i always needed a spare,learned the hard way,twice to always have a spare.new alt,still squeeled,new crank pulley,still squeeled,hours upon hours under the hood,was getting pretty pissed,not to mention looked pretty cheap to the neighbors to always be picking at my car,not to mention as id drive by squeeling my brains out.
i easily spent $500-$600 bucks on unneeded crap.
to one and all the fix was simple once i took the time to correct the obvious.
for what ever reason my factory crankpulley was out of alinement.for a total cost of .23 cents,free in u.s. dollars i purchased 4 lock washers which gave me the difference that was required to make up the shim.
i noticed that all the pulleys werent lining up,but tey,the crank was not that far off,never thought that this was an issue that would cause so much grief.
on the up side my new aftermarket pulley is quite noticable in the quickness in torque,pulling power.not to mention as i was dirty i for one reason or another decided to pull plug wires from the coil pac and noticed one all crapped up,cleaned it,it fell apart in my hand.new plug wires,airfilter,fuel filter,plugs.well i,m a very happppppppy camper.she has never pulled so hard,cant wait to have some fun!
i would love to help someone in need,drop me a line if you want a tip or two as to how to cancel out what is or is not the problem.i was pretty fustrated that i did not get a quick fix solution here serching the fourms,not to mention all the money wasted.
moral is make sure all pulleys are in line!

I was going to say use always OEM belts, a little more but better then the knock offs.
