This post is geared towards the Spyder GS 4G64's.

I am considering buying one, and would like to know what I would be getting into. I don't think they have issues like crankwalk or anything, but do they have other issues? Are they pretty solid cars (and engines)? I travel about 150 miles a day, so I need something that will take it pretty well. The Talon is good, but I don't like having to pay for premium gas every other day. Plus, it's too good of a car to put tons of miles on, LOL.

How are the engines? How is gas mileage? Is a leaky top pretty much expected? What else should I watch out for?

Thanks guys,

Matt

They last as long as a typical Neon engine lasts. Problem areas are the power window and door mechanisms and the brakes.

I had one, sold it with 130K on the clock, aside from tranny problems I created, it was actually quite reliable.

A leaky top can be fixed.. Search on here.
With a new top, and proper installation it you will pretty much 0 leaks. Mine only leaks if I turn high pressure on it, IE a hose with nozzle, right at the front corner.

I dunno how the brakes are problem areas. I haven't had a problem with mine. As for the engine. My sis has a galant with the same motor in it, and beats the hell out of it, but she hasn't had any problems.

Oh yeah.. I just thought of another question. How does the top hold up to snow? I live in the North East, so we sometimes get some pretty good snow. Can it hold it ok?

Thanks,

Matt

I've had no problems with my top in the snow and I'm in PA as well. I also only get leaks under high-pressure water like at a carwash. The comment about it lasting as long as a neon engine would doesnt really make much sence as the 4g64 found in the N/T spyders is a good bit different than the 420A found in the neons and N/T 2gs. :thumb:

Also coming from the guy who said there was a problem with the brakes. and the door lock mechanism, and the window... which would make it a problem on all dsm's in that case, like they are that different.. ;)

gas milage is really good on high way. now if you constantly push your turbo.... wait never mind yours will be non turbo. my roof leaks....... alot. but girls really love those cars. good luck

Ok, cool. I can deal with a leaky top, though I don't think I would have to worry about it until Spring really. As for the alarm system, any suggestions on a good one? I don't know if there is something to look for when getting one for a convertable?

So, by the sounds of it, the engine (and trany, etc) are good? I have found a place that will look for one for me if I want them to, but I gotta put $1k down, so I want to make sure I want to go this route.

Thanks,

Matt

the new compustar's are nice, but a bit pricey. But it has the option of a motion detector, which would be nice esp, if someone tries to slit your top and stick their hand down through. :)
