Ok, I just bought a Laser AWD and I was told that it had a bad ring and thats why it sputters. I checked the plugs and there was no oil. The car does not smoke at all! Is it possible to have a bad piston ring and the car not smoke or get oil on the plug? What is going on here? Please help. I used to have a 95 gsx so back in 02 so im familiar with these cars to some extent. Thanks for your help.

Im gonna do that 2morrow. I have to borrow the tester from a buddy. But still, wouldnt i have oil on the plugs and or smoke from the tail pipe?

+1 on the compression test.

If you find you have low compression, do a leak down test to find where its going.

If compression is fine... do a tune up. That should take care of it.

Edit: I just read your last post. To answer that, not always. You think it would, but engines can do some weird things. Ya know? If your ring is dyING (I.e. on its way out) it wouldn't smoke as much as a fried one.

How much blowby do you have when you open the oil cap when the engine is running?

Compression is good. I think i found out the problem. Its spitting fire out of the exhaust wich more than likely means its running super rich. Its got a new regulator and rail. Injectors are good. How can i fix this problem?

OK big problem. I was told the compression was good. After playing around under the hood for a while trying to find out why it was dumping so much fuel, i started to play with spark. I pulled 4, the car wanted to stall like it should, 3 did the same. But 2 and 1 nothing. I can take the wires off of both of them and the car runs the same as if they were plugged in. The plugs had a fuel smell to them and they did not look like the ones in 3 and 4. 3 and 4 were grayish. 1 and 2 had a darker color. So anyways, i changed the coil, wires and plugs and of course its doing the same. Someone please help!

Does the term blown head gasket ring bells. I would say who ever did the comp check did not know what they were doing or worse.

Redo the comp check. Also things like that don't fix themselves.

But wouldnt it smoke if the head gasket was bad?

Two dead holes side by side two seprate ignition coils kinda elemanates the ignition. Try unplugging the injectors to 1&2 and see how it runs (my bett it smooths out and less smoke) poring raw gas into 2 nonfiring cylinders the gas has to go somewhere and the first stop is the exhaust after that when it hits the tail pipe and all sorts of O2 it ignites.(can you say flames out tailpipe)

Well it will give you somthing to check tomarrow.

Im pretty sure when i do that comp check cylinders 1 and 2 are gonna be bad. Like i said i pull the wires out and nothing happens. I just dont want to do a do the head gasket, set it back in time and then find out its rings ya know?

Well the easy way to find out if the pistons are bad (after the head is off) put some thin oil or berryman chem tool on the pistons (make sure they are down the bore) If it dissapears the rings or lands are gone.

I know it may sound really stupid but check the firing order. When we put a head on a 91 gsx somehow wires 1 and 2 got swapped. It wouldn't change anything if we pulled the wires off those cylinders but if we removed 3 or 4 it would want to die out. It honestly took me a couple of hours to figure out because I never thought of it being something that simple.
