Could I add a factory tach to a base model? Is there a special wire I have to run or is it all there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.. I might have to replace my gauge cluster because my speedo stopped working, the odo spins very very slow so I'm thinking it's the cluster.

Thanks!

I actually have been wondering the same thing. I didn't know if you need to recalibrate the speedo or even solder a different harness for it to work in with the stock wires.

Can anyone chime in?

So I could just get it and replace the old one (which does not have a tach) and everything will plug in and work?

It should... the tach signal is generated by the ECU regardless of whether or not there's a tach gauge. Furthermore, I highly doubt Chrysler invested the extra money to make a separate wiring harness for base and RS/GS models -- hell, even most of the wiring between the 420A and 4G63 versions is the same.

Give it a shot: I'm more than 95% sure it'll work.

Worst possible outcome would be you end up with a tachometer that doesn't work. IMO that is still better than having a big, black circle of nothingness sitting in your instrument cluster. :)

edit: FYI the 99 OZ's have the pretty white faced gauges from the factory. (hint hint)

I used to have a 96 base model. the tach just screwed in the same place as the blank plastic piece and it worked

I snatched up a VSS and GS gauge cluster for 70 bucks shipped, I couldn't find the oz gauges unless they are the ones with the silver/white faces. The cheapest one was 80 bucks + shipping.

I'll have it in a week or so and I'll report my results!

Thanks!

So I put the new sensor in, and the new cluster, and the tach works, but the bulbs don't.. except my blinkers and other lights.. the actual backlighting ones for the instrument cluster do not go on from what I see...
