I was thinking about replacing all of my speakers, however, the ideas I have on installation are not always the easiest to complete (maybe I just like the challenge LOL.

Has anyone ever installed speakers so that they protrude (stick out) through the door panels (in front) and the rear quarter panels (in rear) to be able to use the speaker grill plates that come with most speakers? I could just install them behind the panels but I wanted to add a better look to the sound system if i could. Any help or pictures would be greatful!

If you've ever seen pictures of exactly what you want to do, you will notice how they DONT look better.

But if you insist, just remove the panel and the grill that covers the speaker. Than install the speaker with the enclosed grill. It wont' be clean thats for sure, but you can show off the grill that comes with the speaker if thats important to you. The surrounding of it will be open and you can see the surrounds of the door. It will look like recessed lighting in homes.

The only way you could pull off a "clean" version of this is doing custom work on the door panel to cover up the surrounds.

I just installed some new speakers in my 91 laser and the rear 6X9's cover that came with the speakers won't fit because the hole was too small. I just had to carve out some plastic but very carefully to make it the right fit. And there is pretty much no way to make it perfect. By the time I got to putting in my fronts (which were 5 1/4's) I didn't even bother because I could tell there was no way it was going to turn out good. Just go ghetto on it and paint the stock speaker cover so it looks aftermarket.

Also my 6X9's are 3-ways and they would not fit behind the plastic bars the sit behind the speaker covers so i just took a knife and cut them all off to make room for the tweeters.

Yea maybe you're right. Guess I'll just stick with getting them to fit behind the panels. Not really a big deal to me, and easier than doing custom work..
