after driving around for a while i was at a stop and when i went to go all i heard was a winding/grinding noise. My clutch was slipping really bad before so i guess i toast now? i was just wondering if that happens when a clutch goes completely out...except reverse still works, so i drove it backwards to a more suitible place to park, also not thinking, i blew my radiator in the process. there was a huge bang then white smoke everywhere. i needed a new one anyway. So if someone could please tell me how these clutches go out that would be splendid. im just hoping its the clutch....

uhh...if your clutch or flywheel shattered...you got bigger problems. and i have no idea how you "blow" a radiator......

Popped a radiator hose, maybe? And if you only have reverse working, that might be transmission problems as well.

yeah i dont know how my radiator blew either, right in the top theres a big gash and you can see the core...yeah its not good, but i needed a new one anyway this one was rotted.

So back to the tranny question, if it will only go in reverse and not any other gear is that just a clutch/flywheel problem or could the internals of the tranny be damaged? its always shifted fine, just the clutch was slipping bad ever since i bought it.

That sounds to me like a tranny problem. If it were just a bad clutch, you would have problems in all gears, not just reverse. But to get to the clutch, you're going to have to pull the tranny either way, so pull it and send it off to get looked at while you replace your clutch.

yeah im in the teardown process now getting ready to pull the engine and tranny, and sand blasting all parts that need restoring. but ive found a 92 tsi with the 6/4 bolt combo so im thinking this will be my parts car.
