Recently I finished a sound deadening install and wanted to post up some pictures and the effectiveness of this rather simple mod. The whole install took about 2 days (around 12 hours total). The most challenging part was getting the material into the little nooks and crannies without gouging my hands and arms too much. Luckily the Mitsu engineers designed the inner panels such that acces to the outer panels want too difficult, for the most part.

I ended up using 100 sqaure feet of the Fatmat sound deadening, 36 square feet of carpet padding, and 20 square feet of air duct insulation. I covered everything I possible could, excluding the roof panel which just seemed like opening a can of worms to me.

I was able to get quite a bit of the sound deadening inside the outer panels of the body and also stuffed the carpet padding between the two layers. The thinnest layer of material between the road and the interior of the car is under the backseats. Its one layer of metal, thats it. So that got about 3 layers of sound deadening and a layer of carpet padding. I also gave that treatment to the driveshaft well through the mddle of the interior.

My GSX came with the brackets for 6x9 rear speakers which along with the area above the rear struts I converted into a speaker enclosure using the sound deadening and carpet padding. Not that this measurement is any real evidence of an improvement but before the install I couldnt turn my volume past 12 without getting distortion and vibration. Now I can hit 20 maintaining good clarity and solid bass, thanks to the new enclosures. Ths same can be said for the material I placed on each of the doors. I basically covered the inside of the outer body panels as well as the flat areas of the inner door panels and behind the door speakers.

All in all the install was a success and a major improvement in comfort and quietness. The only noise I hear now comes from the engine compartment and the muffler. I cannot hear any of the drivetrain noise I used to hear. My $150 MP3 deck with stock speakers sounds like a $1000 system because of the sound quality produced. I would highly reccomend doing this to anyone who drives their DSM daily and wants alot more comfort. I havent reweighed the car yet after the install but based on thye shipping weight and my estimation of the other materials I figure I added 40 pounds spread fairly evenly throughout the car, not anything significant.

Before shots, interior removed (mostly):
