Recently I finished a sound deadening install and wanted to post up some pictures and the effectiveness of this rather simple mod. The whole install took about 2 days (around 12 hours total). The most challenging part was getting the material into the little nooks and crannies without gouging my hands and arms too much. Luckily the Mitsu engineers designed the inner panels such that acces to the outer panels want too difficult, for the most part.

I ended up using 100 sqaure feet of the Fatmat sound deadening, 36 square feet of carpet padding, and 20 square feet of air duct insulation. I covered everything I possible could, excluding the roof panel which just seemed like opening a can of worms to me.

I was able to get quite a bit of the sound deadening inside the outer panels of the body and also stuffed the carpet padding between the two layers. The thinnest layer of material between the road and the interior of the car is under the backseats. Its one layer of metal, thats it. So that got about 3 layers of sound deadening and a layer of carpet padding. I also gave that treatment to the driveshaft well through the mddle of the interior.

My GSX came with the brackets for 6x9 rear speakers which along with the area above the rear struts I converted into a speaker enclosure using the sound deadening and carpet padding. Not that this measurement is any real evidence of an improvement but before the install I couldnt turn my volume past 12 without getting distortion and vibration. Now I can hit 20 maintaining good clarity and solid bass, thanks to the new enclosures. Ths same can be said for the material I placed on each of the doors. I basically covered the inside of the outer body panels as well as the flat areas of the inner door panels and behind the door speakers.

All in all the install was a success and a major improvement in comfort and quietness. The only noise I hear now comes from the engine compartment and the muffler. I cannot hear any of the drivetrain noise I used to hear. My $150 MP3 deck with stock speakers sounds like a $1000 system because of the sound quality produced. I would highly reccomend doing this to anyone who drives their DSM daily and wants alot more comfort. I havent reweighed the car yet after the install but based on thye shipping weight and my estimation of the other materials I figure I added 40 pounds spread fairly evenly throughout the car, not anything significant.

Before shots, interior removed (mostly):

Pics ???? What was weight of materials ?

Just the Fatmat itself weighs 23 pounds installed, I'm not sure about the ducting insulation and the carpet padding. I would guess anouther 15-20 on top of that so around 40 pounds total.

You should buy some brand new carpet and make everything look perfect and brand new, ive been thinking about sound deading my car nice to see somone doing it with some pics...

Got any finish photos of it all assembled after the sound deading? Any issue with assembly due to spacing issues?

I didnt have any fitment isues at all. After doing an install like this before and not being careful about bolt holes and so on I made sure to take my time, photograph and document where every piece went before removing it. With the inch of carpet padding my floor boards are a bit higher than before but no biggie.

Here are some interior pics. The previous owner of this car must have kept it garaged or something because the interior was immaculate when I bought it at 113k miles. Alittle armor all and it looks like new :thumb:

Nice job man! I bet that is a lot more comfortable ride! You are definitely right, in a daily driver who cares about 40 lbs! That must be the cleanest 1g interior I have ever seen!

Great job, Very clean install and your interior looks awsome. after i got to the track this weekend, i am thinking i will go with making my car a Better daily driver again.

Get a good sound system, and try to do what you did. :thumb:

I've been wanting to do that for a while, but that deadening is just so expensive. I did get some "Great Stuff" and sprayed it in every place I could think of. That made it alot quieter.

P.S.- How much do you want for your 1g? That thing is b-e-a-utifil on the inside

So are you gonna be putting carpet throughout the back or are you just putting the back seats back? I want to see if you can just carpet the back and somehow still make it look nice with that stupid drop that's in the back.

The sound deadening I used is called www.fatmat.com. I bought their 100 square foot bulk pack for $130 shipped, compared to dynamat its a steal!

I thought about using that "great stuff" but I was worried it would be too messy. How did yours turn out?

Thanks for the compliment but I'm still building her, maybe when I'm done I'll think about selling.

I put all of the interior back in. I did however add about 3-4 layers of sound deadening and a layer of carpet padding under the back seats. I had to squeez the seats to make them fit but no problems really.

It wasn't near as messy as I thought it'd be. You have to be careful though, it dries quickly and is hard to get out of the carpet if you miss. Works good though. I'll have to look into that fatman. Did you have to get a roller or anything else?

That's something I've been considering doing for awhile now. I just couldn't bring myself to spend all that money on dynomat, but that stuff is definitly a whole lot cheaper so I just may have to get me some!

I would think any Home Depot, Loews or any place that sells carpet would have it.

Yep, I got mine at Lowe's. It was around $15 for the 6 liner feet (36sq/ft) of the "premium" carpet padding. It's the thickest and most dense which also has a waterproof layer on one side.
