ok lets keep this short and simple i own a 93 camaro v6 now i have it for sale or trade and i got answered today a guy who is willing to trade me his 97 eclipse gs and i dont know if its even worth it for me. i know alot about eclipse's and i have researched a few forums and basically it comes down to this what can i do to remove this engine and swap something else? i know theres talk about doing a 2.4 swap. but i wanna know will i be able to do a direct gst swap or am i going to have to swap out the mounts? if thats not an option, how much better will the 2.4 swap be for me? i like horsepower is this a better engine to get more horspower out of it? without having to do much fabricating whats my best option? or should i just say no and keep my camaro? please let me know what you think.
 
By a ton of fab work they mean welding in some mount brackets. LOADS of fab work....

Is it easier to just get a gst? Sure.

Loads of work for the swap, yes.

It isn't just welding in mount brackets, the strut towers and frame rails are different. To do it right you basically have to cut off everything from the firewall forward and weld the parts from a gst in.

The frame rails, cross member, mounts, etc all have to cut from a donor car and welded into the NT chassis while still keeping everything lined up. Your replacing nearly 2/3 of the functional engine bay. That is quite a bit of fabrication. So please don't act like were all simpletons and it's "so easy" because it isn't.

A picture of an EXTREMELY rigged up car proves nothing to me. Sure you can just rig it up. To do it RIGHT, you need to swap the towers and rails. Seriously, a 1g body harness, maf, intercooler piping, mounts.

Why buy 2 parts cars and make more work out something than it has to be?

More than one way to skin a cat, but why resort to the hardest most complicated method when all you need is a knife?

I guess my standard is just different than yours. If i were doing the work for someone else, or for a car that i was selling than there would be NO WAY that it would be rigged up like that.
 
Other than a boost controller and no emissions its not rigged in any way. Its a complete 1g 6bolt swap into a 420a car. The brackets are stronger than the oe 2g brackets. I don't see any need to use a 2g harness, ecu, mas, or intercooler when you allready have all the 1g bits.

That is rigged any way you look at it. It's fine if you like rigged shit like that. Most people don't. I'd love to see the front and rear mount rigging. Using a 1g transmission will require you to completly fabricate the front and rear mounts also. You also failed to mention what is done about the lack of hump to clear the transmission on the passenger side. I can also tell from the pic that the engine is sitting at least an inch further towards the passenger side than what it normally would.

I supposed if you don't want something rigged in any way you best stick to bolt-ons bruh, cause that shit posted above is just as rigged as the car that only took a half hour of welding, and far less initial investment to get swapped.

90% Of the stuff people do to cars is "rigged" as you put it. Who makes direct fit drain line for any turbo other than a 14b/16g/20g or t-28/25? No one, who makes a short fmic for a 2g that doesn't require triming of radiator support? No one. Long story short, that car ran better than most and was turn key and go, no issues what so ever with the mounts. Even if they were to fail, it would be at a much higher level of performance than the average dsmer will ever see, and the ones that are building a car to be that fast probably started with an AWD in the first place.

I've seen manifolds with shittier looking welds if your beef is with the weld appearance. Sure its not a stack of dimes, but its not ####ing horrible either.

First off, i didn't post the link of the car above, that is NOT the correct way to do it at all. The correct way is to drill out all the spot welds and re weld on the other car. There is a difference between rigging something up and buying and installing aftermarket parts that require a little modification.

Again, show me a pic of the front and rear engine mounts as well as the passenger side frame rail. I would love to see what was done there.
 
Trans mount was bolted in with 4 long bolts all the way through the frame rail, and then welded in place. The rear mount was removed from a 1g and used, k-member was a 2g gst IIRC. Its been over 2 years since I've even seen the car, much less wrenched on it.

That was the most recent good engine bay shot I had. Will see if there are any others.
 
How is the engine bay I posted "The wrong way"? Did you look at all 200+ pictures in the thread, or are you basing your assumption off the pictures I showed? I thought at least someone in this thread would recognize TRUE fabrication in progress..... Apparently not. Obviously welding fasteners through the frame is the "right" way to do it now days. :rolleyes: Take a look at the pic below and tell me that's rigged in any way.

But all pissing contests aside, this is the newbie forum where the OP was asking how much work it is to swap in a GST engine. In my experience, if you have to ask then you aren't ready to do it. Coming in here and saying otherwise is crap advice. Congrats, you swapped a 4g63 into a NA shell. Don't give the less experienced the huge misconception that it's "easy" and anyone who can't do it is "dumb".

Excuse my ignorance but how capable are the v6 camaros? Im guessing atleast as capable as a 420a but I have no idea.
If you do end up trading you'll probably be a dsm'e for life. I started of with a 98 RS and I'm totally addicted now LOL

Not real capable with the v6, BUT, you can swap the k member from a ls1 car and the ls1 will bolt right in.
 
I've owned both the 3.4 camaro and the 3.8. If you want to go all out, the LS1 swap is easy to do - switch out the k-members and suspension, gauges, transmission (if you want the T-56 over the 4L60E), transmission mounts, etc. However, if you want to be a little more discreet (and a bit cheaper) about a sixer, find an s/c from a GTP or a late Regal and do a little chop and weld for something completely different. I helped someone in OKC do that a couple years ago and the results were astounding for about $300 in total investments. That, or you could get bold and turbo the sixer. That would involve more work than I care to admit, but its different. People like different most of the time.
