are the new sony explode 15" subs any good? how about the rockford fosgat punch? I'm planning on building a box for some subwoofers for school(woodshop). it's gonna be for 2 15" subs so i need some feed back.

Neither would be on my list.

Take a look at Image Dynamics.
Ignore people who talk about Adire unless you want to run a million watts.
I'm not looking to load the car with a heavy enclosure or load the electrical system with inefficient speakers, so I chose a single IDQ-12

I've got 2 15" Rockford Punch Stage 1 in my RS wired in parallel by a Punch 3001 amp rated at 394W@2O. I never intended it to be an annoy-the-neighbors system, but it sounds damn good for actually LISTENING to the music in the car. Combine that with a Punch 3002 amp for 285@2O to two sets of RF components (P162S & P1962S) - and you've got a great system for listening to music with a stock alternator.

I have 3 Punch 10's pushed by a Punch 45 amp. They are the new Punch speakers, which are like 1/10 of what the classic Punch used to be. Same with the amp. However, our cars are like rolling speaker boxes, and it doesn't take much to bounce off the rear hatch and cause some ear pain. My cheap 3 speakers and Punch 45 amp make my chest hurt after about a minute!

You don't need to spend an arm and a leg on top-quality stuff if you just want something that sounds good. In short, neither the Punch nor the Sony's are great speakers, but in a hatchback that's all you'll need.

I run a pair of RF P312D4 Duel Coil 12 in Subs in my Avenger... OMFG... They have a beautiful flow to them both in terms of bass and just out right listening enjoyment. I run them off of a pair of RF Power T10001bd Mono Amps and just... wow....

Do those subs sound clean on low wattage (~200) or do you have to crank them to get a clean sound?

That phenomonon is called transfer function and it's what makes huge bass possible in cars. That same system would produce much less bass if it were in your home.

One has more watts then the other. As for one being better it depends what your looking for i guess. If you want more bump get the w6 as i said really the only difference in the 2 is one can handle more power.

Check out there sites for specifications. I run 1 12 W6 with a 500/1 JL audio amp and the bass is just phenomenal.

I wouldnt recommend getting the W7 because the 12in w7 weighs around 50lbs. Unless your going for all bass. The old school JL audio subs are great subs too. w3s were very popular back in the day and you can pick them up off ebay pretty cheap. Ethier way if you go JL Audio you wont be dissapointed.

Ive had both and like the rockfords better. Im running 1 15 in Rockford now and it sounds damn good.

10W7 on a 500/1 i also debated between a 12w6 but the w7 is just so clean it really does the job on many variety of music as well as variety of volumes

they sound gorgeous at any volume..... at lower volumes they have a real... delicate richness to them. you actually get a lot more detail at lower volumes than higher... but at high volumes- the clarity is still ASTOUNDING....

So is their ability to crack glass in hatchbacks. :thumb:

If you don't dynamat your car I will slap you silly. ;)

If I have to listen to one more buzzing license plate I think I'll snap. WTF

SPEAKERS AND SUBS

Until recently, woofers have changed very little. Sure, there have been vast improvements in materials, but the basic shape and function has remained constant. Lately, there have been several companies that are trying to break the traditional mold of what we think a speaker should look like. Today, you can buy square- and even triangle-shaped woofers. With the introduction of Sony’s XS-L121P5, you can have a pentagon shaped woofer as well.

First Look
The XS-L121P5 is a 12-inch, 4-ohm woofer that ushers in a new direction from Sony. For those of us who forgot our high-school geometry, a pentagon is a five-sided polygon. It’s in this shape that Sony believes they have created a polypropylene speaker cone that improves rigidity for lower distortion and the reduction of standing waves on the cone itself. By using this unique shape, the Sony XS-L121P5 basket has five pairs of mounting holes, giving you two more mounting holes over standard style woofers. This solid mounting is a nice touch. The Sony XS-L121P5 is designed for small sealed or ported enclosures.

Closer Look
The ruby red color of the polypropylene cone compliments the silver basket frame nicely. The rubber surround incorporates three expansion ribs at five points to control the pistonic motion of the woofer. The suspension system uses dual, "Triple-layer" spiders where the lead wires are embedded into the top spider. This prevents the lead wires from interfering with the movement of the woofer. Connections to the speaker are made through sturdy gold-plated binding posts. The Sony XS-L121P5 uses a four-layer, edge-wound voice coil on an aluminum former, which packs the voice coil wire into a smaller space for improved efficiency. The aluminum former acts as a heat sink to help dissipate the heat generated by high-power operation.

Manuals/Web Support
Information on the Sony XS-L121P5 was available on the Sony Xplod Web site located at www.xplodsony.com. The site is a slick, flash-based portal that contains basic information about the woofer and other Sony car audio products. The site allows consumers to register their products and to ask questions of the technical department of Sony. However, I was not able to find a direct link on the car audio site to download any product literature or information manual. Only by searching Sony’s main site was I able to be finally directed to another one of Sony’s sites, www.iq.sony.com/srvs/sosdocs/ . Here, I was able to download the owner’s manual and Thiele-Small parameters for the XS-L121P5. The owner’s manual provided basic installation information and specifications about the XS-L121P5, but neither the owner’s manual nor the Web site provided any enclosure recommendations (Sony reports that enclosure recommendations are included in the carton of each 8- to 15-inch P5 sub — ed.).

Installation
The Sony XS-L121P5 was sent to me installed in an enclosure. The outside dimensions of the enclosure are 26.5 inches by 16.5 inches by 10 inches (L x W x H). The enclosure was constructed with high-quality marine-grade plywood covered in gray trunk liner material. This ported enclosure uses a 3-inch flared port with a functional length of 8.5 inches located adjacent to the front face of the enclosure. Based on this information, the total enclosure volume was measured at a net volume of 1.67cubic feet, with the enclosure tuned to 34 Hz. The combined weight of the enclosure and woofer is 36.5 pounds. There was no internal bracing, baffling, or acoustical treatments.

Sound Q & Performance
I placed the test enclosure in the back of a Minivan and measured the SPL output with power input of 1 watt, 350 watts, and 1200 watts, respectively. The higher power levels were referenced to the RMS and Peak power ratings of the XS-L121P5.

The enclosure supplied is on the smaller side for a 12-inch woofer at 1.67 cubic feet for a ported enclosure. Even so, the Sony XS-L121P5 generated very good output. The SPL output with 1 watt of power exceeded 105 dB between 40 Hz to 50 Hz with only a 3 dB drop in SPL at 31.5 Hz. In a smaller vehicle, you could easily see an increase of +3 to +6 dB of output. Upping the power to its rated RMS power rating of 350 watts delivered a commendable SPL output of 126.8 dB at 50 Hz down to 121.9 dB at 31.5 Hz. The sound quality of the woofer was good. There was some audible ringing coming from the enclosure which I attributed to the lack of acoustical treatment inside the enclosure. (The addition of some internal insulation would be effective in eliminating these enclosure noises.) The woofer or port did not generate any audible noises.

With 1200 watts applied, the Sony XS-L121P5 delivered a loud 130.3 dB at 50 Hz. With nearly three-and-a-half times more power, the XS-L121P5 increased its output less than 3 dB. Power compression of the woofer was as evident as the audible strain during this test. At frequencies lower than the port tuning frequency, the SPL increase was created by the rattling and bottoming out noises from the XS-L121P5. This baby was angry. For high power applications, I strongly recommend the use of a subsonic filter.

Summary
The Sony XS-L121P5 is a woofer at an entry-level price point with good performance, better sound quality, and really cool looks. With a reasonable amount of power, the XS-L121P5 will deliver good SPL and tonal quality. The XS-L121P5 also matches there pentagon shaped subwoofer amplifiers, allowing for some very cool installation opportunities. In the world of me-too products, the Sony XS-L121P5 offers something different that will satisfy your performance as well as cosmetic needs.

Lies, Damn Lies And Woofer Specifications
Specs can sometimes be misleading. Many people think that such a high power handling of 1200 watts means the woofer will play really loud. As evident in the test, however, less than a 3 dB increase in SPL output was achieved with nearly 3.5 times more power than the correctly rated 350 watts RMS power rating. While the XS-L121P5 did handle this high power of 1200 watts, it did so barely. The reality is that anyone using 1200 watts on this woofer for anything other than short instantaneous bursts would seriously strain and, most likely, damage the woofer. Given the lack of significant SPL increase, it would not be worth the risk.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sony XS-L121P5 On The Sonoda Scale
Strengths: Unique shape, cool cosmetics, and good SPL output at RMS rated power
Weakness: Power compression and audible strain at peak rated power handling
Best use: With amplifier 350 watts to 500 watts per woofer

I have ordered from both, very good ebayers

My current set-up is an MTX MXS1004 bridged to an MTX Thunder 8302 Amp rated @ 457wrmsx1 at 4ohms according to it's "birth sheet"

im building a box for 3 12" subs. what would you recommend for subs? i'm looking into spending about $200-300 a sub.

hehe, sony's "XPLOD"... LOL that's a good one

well, rockfords don't "punch" either.

I own this sub:
http://www.lanzar.com/itempage.asp?MODEL=OPTI1532D

It's a lanzar OPTIDrive 1523D. It's amazingly loud, yet it still sounds great. It's in a 3ft ported box tuned to 35hz. Everyone that hears my car doesn't believe that it's just 1 15" sub. You can buy one here:

Great all around sub, works well in "small" (for a 15 anyways) ported and sealed enclosures.

Audiobahn AWES15P 15" Eternal Series: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_2236.html
Awsome sub, requires lots and lots of power to push. extremly loud, but they require a big box to work well.

MA Audio MA1500XL: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_2761.html
Works great in small(er) sealed enclosures, but you don't get their full potential. the sound great, and very smooth, in a big ported box.

MA Audio MA180XE 18": http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3756.html
The big boy. Earplugs and space required.

Honestly, for our cars, 12's are more than enough. Especially if you get what i just set up in my friends car. sounds amazing, and lets just say that it's LOUD. His car isn't a DSM, so i don't know how the box would fit, but this setup is amazing. Way louder than L7's.
