Its not my car so i dont know all of the problem. I guess turbo smokes. What could it be?

What color is the smoke? If its white smoke it can probably be your turbo or head gasket, but most likely its your turbo mine was and another buddy's too... use the search forum and you will most likely encounter your problem and how to go about fixing it.

pretty sure hes got a brand new gasket and the engine only has 20k on it. so he might need a new turbo?

Okay, is it your car or not? If it's not, then find out what goals the owner has, and let him/her make the choice. Is it the turbo smoking, or the engine? Find that out before you go throwing parts at the car.

its a car im intrested in buying. And i wanted to know how deep im getting into in buying this car. vr4 for 1500. but its got a little tranny leak and the smoking turbo. White smoke. thats all i know. 20k miles on engine. 2.3

My turbo/manifold smoked visibly but not a ton of smoke. It was just coming off that area I figured it was the anti seize stuff I used on the bolts. This was first start up with a new turbo though. Hasn't at any other times.

When i got my car it smoked so much it was like someone was holding a fogger under my hood...... later i found a blown head gasket and melted piston on top of all that the turbo was shot as well but it sounds like your turbo is going out check the intake and intercooler piping for an exessive amont of oil

Most likely its bad turbo seals. As stated check the ic piping for oil.You can or he can w.e LOL either buy a new turbo and upgrade or rebuild that one if he or whoever can't afford a new turbo. There simple to rebuild as long at your compressor wheel didn't hit and cause any damage cause then it threw it off balance and you will need to send it to a shop then you might as well just upgrade.

if theres shaft play and the housing is fine can i just replace the turbine. and that could fix the problem?

If the seals are shot, then no, merely replacing the shaft won't do anything. You'll need to rebuild the turbo center section (new bearings, seals, etc) as well as replace the turbine shaft/wheel combo.

If the turbo is bad, just invest in the Evo III 16g. It's just not worth all the trouble to rebuild the stock turbo. Also, just how much smoke is it? Is it a small puff when it boosts? Is it a huge smoke screen at boost? Is it only a small bit at idle? What makes you think it's the turbo?

My 14b had shaft play and needed new turbines i took it apart and noticed that it was a little more work than i thought it was going to be to rebuild it, so i replaced it with a EVOIII big 16g. if you think you have the mechanical ability to re build the turbo go for it you would not only gain experence, you would also have the hands on knowledge on how turbos work inside and out and theres nothing wrong with learning something new about your car!
