Smoking/boost problem

I have a 90 gsx. I just did a headgasket on it about 1200 miles ago. Has been running great. Today i noticed that when i shifted when under boost, that is puffed a bit of smoke between the shift. Its a whitish/grey smoke. I also noticed in 4th and 5th (maybe third) then when i floor it, my boost goes to around 5 then it drops back off to around 3 for a while, then it builds up to full boost, around 13psi. Before in fifth my boost would build steady to 13 psi, now it takes a long time. On my A/F guage, when it goes to 5 and back down it says its running just a bit rich, 1-2 bars into rich (it did this before it was puffing smoke) Its not very far into the rich zone at all.

Is my 14b taking a dump on me?

that might be the beginning of a bad turbo yes.
I am assuming that you put every vaccum line and functioning hoses back on in the correct place. You might want to take the turbo off and look at the play the turbine inside makes. It should be very little to none. Also..the color of the blade and wheel, it should be black, but ive heard people pulling them off and finding white inside and junk falling out of them. good luck man.

are you using the stock boost gauge to measure the boost?? grayish smoke is probably fuel wich is typically normal for a turbo car to puff inbetween shifts. i would take off the intake and check the blade by hand . if theres no shaft play then your turbo is fine. sound like your car has a bad tune. probably boost leaks are to blame.

Sorry i should have specified. I did a boost leak test a few weeks ago, and i fixed them all. The turbo does have shaft play, a decent amount of side to side. No in and out.

If the turbo has shaft play, a decent amount, and you're getting puffs of smoke between shifts, chances are it's the turbo. This is exactly what happened when my T25 went out. Do you notice it more on cold days, right after start-up, then it tapers off the warmer it gets?

Well it started last night. Was about 55 degrees. I drove it this morning at about 20 degrees, its seems MAYBE a bit worse, not a lot though. The turbo was glowing red on the exhaust side after about a 10-14 min drive.

Yea, it definately sounds like your turbo is on its way out the door. You have the symptoms.

is the smoke more of a bluish color? have you messed with the stock fuel system at all? if theres significant amount of play in the turbo i would just swap it and see if that fixes the problem.

Just got back from work. Today i noticed the smoke is a sort of feint blueish color. I could smell a bit of oil as well Now i need to decide on a evo 3 16g or a 20g, 50 trim . I have not changed the fuel system at all btw.

The problem with a new turbo is i dont have the supporting mods yet And i dont wanna waste money on a 14b if im gonna upgrade to a bigger one anyway.
