ok im not exactly new to DSM's i am on my 3rd one. ive had a 98 GST a 95 GST with a 6 bolt swap and i currently have a 98 Talon Tsi AWD 5 speed.
i got he car a month ago and it already had a few minor mods done to it, i knew it had a few problems. but it runs fine and i couldnt pass up the deal i only gave $1300 for it. i will start off by telling you the mods that are done to the car and yes i know its dumb but they are all cheapo ebay parts. but they were already on the car when i got it. it has a big 16g turbo, obx front mount, blow off valve that i have no clue what kind it is, stock air box is gone and has cheap ebay intake pipe with autozone spectre filter, some kind of cheap manual boost controller and cheap turbo timer.
ok now the problems im having, it smokes when boosting and when i let off the gas, but if i baby it and dont let it boost it dont smoke much at all. it smells like oil burning and the turbo spools up nice and smooth. they had a hose coming from the side of the valve cover going into the air intake pipe so i figured it was just sucking oil into the air intake. so i took the hose off and put a breather on the valve cover and plugged the hole on the air intake. but it still smokes. i get fuel cut at arount 13 psi. but i imagine thats because i took the walbro 255 fuel pump out and put the stock fuel pump back in because i work an hour away and it was takin 3/4 of a tank of gas to go to work and back. i took my front mount intercooler piping off and cleaned the oil out of all of it and drove it for a week and took it off again and it has oil in it again. i have to keep putting oil in my car every 4 days or so it just depends on how much and how hard i run it. my starter went out today and i dont know if its easier to get to it from the top or from underneath.

EDIT check for side to side shaft play. Sounds like your seals in the turbo are gone. As for replacing the stock FP was the car tuned? I can barely read your post

Sorry. I tried editing it. The turbo does have side to side shaft play. It quit spooling completely so i took a screw drive with a rubber handle and beat the shaft back in. I haven't had a problem with the side to side shaft play since. I did that 3 weeks ago. I did look at rebuild kits for the turbo but there are too many different ones and i dont know exactly which one to get.
The car was tuned at a shop that specializes in junk hondas so im sure they didn't do it right. It was done long before i got the car. I havn't had it tuned since i put the stock FP back in either.

YOU beat the shaft back in? WOW I would look into replacing the turbo. If its bad enough to seize to the housing its done. YOu cant rebuild them. Try searching members and input OHIO that should help. Which turbo are you running?

LOL yeah i beat the shaft back in. It's worked fine ever since but i imagine i need a new turbo. I will probly just go with putting a stock turbo back on. I have no plans on building this motor because it is a 2g engine and it has 193,000 miles LOL i have had better luck with doin the 6bolt swaps in the 2g cars. the turbo is a cheap ebay big 16g that was on the car when i got it.

buy a different turbo. get an afpr for your wally255. and take your starter somewhere to have it rebuilt. or buy a new one at the auto part store. i wouldn't reccomend running the little filter/breather off the valve cover. not a good idea.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. It sounds like a daily driver. I would keep it as close to stock as possible. Anyone can tell you that the more you mod it, the more you will be tweaking and adjusting. However, it all depends on your patience/money.

Good Luck

i took the walbro 255 off and put a stock fuel pump back on because it is my only means of transportation right now. so now we got the smoking problem figured out i just need to get a new turbo. my next question is, whats the easiest way to get to the starter to take it out? through the top or from underneath?

From the top! Disconnect your battery please!

Just another suggestion. The 2g starters have a common issue with the ding wire (small wire) at the solenoid falling off. OR the quick connector corroding. My starter on my 95 bench tested good after I had it off and I foudn after tracing the wire back to the loom and fishing it out that the connector had battery acid corrosion I repaird it and the starter worked fine. Its a very common issue with either situation. I would recommend having the starter tested before you drop a pretty penny on a new one

Just food for thought

im thinking that the starter is bad because it made a horrible grinding noise and was very loud every time i went to start it for about a week but it still started up. but now its not catching it just makes a grinding noise and wont turn the motor over

Do you mean fore/aft shaft play (on axis) or side-to-side play at the compressor wheel? Fore/aft play is pretty serious and likely to result in oil consumption, but a little compressor side-to-side play isn't necessarily that big a deal!

Assuming your standing in front of the automobile when you remove the intake piping. Your grasping the turbine and pushing in and pulling out. Thats side to side or east and west or horizontal shaft play. NO BUENO. Up and down isnt bad as most turbos show minimal up and down play. :thumb:

yeah since i put the stock fuel pump in it my gas milage has been ALOT better. i am assuming that my oil loss is caused by the shitty cheap ebay 16g since the shaft moves in and out (left and right) but the shaft hasnt moved at all ever since i beat it back in LOL. i knew that turbo was goin to be nothing but problems when i bought the car and they told me it was an ebay turbo. i ended up getting a stock turbo from a friend of mine for free, it has a little shaft play but nothing more than normal play. but it been sitting outside in the weather for a few months but it spins real good using my fingers. im just going to put it all back to stock and leaving the front mount on. it is my daily driver for now, i traded my durango for a 96 blazer with a 385 stroker and im putting a turbo on that so it will be my toy, its lifted with 38 inch super swamper boggers. anyone have any input on what turbo i should go with?
