well i searched online and in my repair manaul and was unable to find out witch hose to put the smoke in to test for leaks. can some1 please tell me?
also i seen in a video some1 using a cigar to do the test, does that work? or a cigarette? i dont have a smoke machine or know any1 that does that i can use for free or get tested for free....diy

LOL...ok so i blew smoke into the hose between the throttle body and bov and there was a major leak coming from the throttle return spring. lots of smoke. is there a gasket in there? it also looked like there may be a small amount coming from the throttle position sensor... any ideas?

Yes they are throttle body shaft seals. There is two, one on the side with the spring and one on the side with the TPS. They are just simply rubber seals that dry and harden over time. I had to replace my seals in my 1g TB.

not sure how to merge my threads...ca smog fail is also mine but...yeah so the two phillips screws are holding on the throttle body plate and are peened over. do i just shave off the peen?

Lightly grind off the peened ends of the screws. Remove the screws with either an impact screwdriver or simply tap the end of a regular screwdriver with a hammer to get more of a bite on the screws. Be careful not to strip those out. Here is a link to the seals:

You also have to scribe where the TPS is so you dont have any issues with the car after the reinstall.

I use a smoke machine near daily @ work.
Most all of them today are designed to test evaportive systems for leaks.
With that in mind those system work with very little pressure.

Most smoke machines are calibrated to pressurize to about 10-15 inchs of water column.
Not a mecury scale, because the pressure is so low. But that's about a 1/2 a PSI mercury. So a smoke machine designed for evaportive testing is too low to test a system that will see 10 psi+ easy.

It may find some blatant leaks, but the system needs to be tested with the pressures that it works with normally to be conclusive.

sounds right to me, however i did find a major leak and i orderd the throttle shaft seals from extreme psi. the car failed smog at idle with 356 hc of a max 120. the car has no boost at idle so hopefully this will help me pass smog. it passed wonderfully at the 2500rpm test with only 3hc. fyi the test is done while the vehicle is stationary bcuz its awd. should i coat the new seals with oil or grease to help them seal better?
