Smoke Coming Out Of Breather Why??????????

Hey Guys,

I just started my car up this morning and out of no where, alot of air started to huff from the breather filter on the valve cover(one next to the thermostat housing). Even after rev'in the engine a bit during idle, ALOT more smoke came out. I changed my PCV valve about a year ago too. I then took out the oil cap and air shot out of there as well. I recently redid my timing belt, changed head gasket, and valve seals about 2 months ago as well. Can anyone help me out??

BTW, if my piston rings were to go, would this happen?
 
yes, run a compression check...if your compression is below i think its 133PSI then you need to really consider rebuilding your valvetrain...new valve gaskets especially...but for a good car it should be around 160-180. double check the #'s tho its been a year since i did mine last.

Well...let's see here. I quoted you and then wrote ":confused: LOL". So yeah, I guess it *was* you I was laughing at. Go figure. :rolleyes:

I didn't mean it as a "big deal" but since you wanna take it there, fine. They're called "valve seals" moron. And compression has nothing to do with them. Installing new valve seals won't change compression a bit. A valve or ring job however will. Don't post info you obviously know nothing about.

i have white smoke coming out the tail and the breather. im thinking it is my turbo cuz its making wierd noises and i know it has play in it and it dosen't spool till 3500. its a ported 14b not a 50 trim that i want on there. ;) would the turbo being blown cause it to come out of the breather also? if so time to get that 50 trim. or could it be the rings? i comp tested it and it has 165 or better accross. its a 1g in a 2g.
 
I have noticed that lately my car has been blowing lots of oil out of the breather filter. could this bee from me filling the oil to much. It was suppose to take 4.2 but i put about 4.6 qts in. It does it even if i rev the car in nuetral a little i can see the oil squirt out the breather on the valve cover. THE PCV IS BRAND NEW. It never did this before it just started happening. Any ideas.
 
there was a catch can on mine, with the top hacked off...and a self made tube that a k&n breather sat on. There was also a hole cut into the bottom of the catch can,,,,it worked fine, but i wanted to take it of and mount a breather on the valve cover stem. i did, and it spits oil out like crazy all over the crank angle sensor. Mine's a tiny breather though, some friends have bigger ones that used to blow out a lot of oil, but don't so much any more. They're only supposed to taked up to 9lbs till that stem blows out oil. Get a bigger breather or best yet....get a catch can.
 
OK Well my car was smoking the other day so I garage it and look inside. Firstly the wastegate hose is dry and cracked so i reaplce that start the car it still smokes. So I got around and did an oil change, hoping it would help... When the hood is open I rev the car to see where the smoke is coming from. well it is coming from the breather barb on the head a good amount comes out when I rev the engine, and a little when it is idling. and it does not idle very well it was be fine for a few seconds then will start to sputter then will die. Please help me this is my first DSM and I dont have much money just need to know how to fix this .!!!
 
On a different forum someone said that it might be a vacuum leak..Does this sound correct with the symptoms the car is displaying?
 
Hey man what year is your car, and have you rebuilt the motor? Does the the smoke smell like exhaust or maybe it doesnt smell much. It could just be your oil smoking a little, if you use a low grade oil that happens, but its not going to be a lot of smoke. My best guess is that if it is tons of smoke and it is puffing out of the crankcase then you are in serious need of an overhaul, could be worn rings or scratched up cylinder walls. But only if its lots of smoke. Take of your oil fill cap and rev the throttle a little, if the smoke billows out then its probably bad news.
 
To me it sounds like maybe your PCV is stuck closed. Try taking it out and shake it back and forth. If you dont hear it rattle then most likely its stuck closed. Yea what Model and Year is your DSM? We will try to help you out better, but please specify your DSM.
 
O ya sorry bout that one. My car is a 1991 TSi AWD with a small 16g ported and clipped, 190lph fuel pump, 2.5 inch turbo back , 3inch intake K&N filter, and basic free mods...
 
every car does it when the motor is hot. at least all of the dsms ive seen...

edit...
sometimes it helps if you put a "NO SMOKING" sign under the hood of your car. Most times your valve cover breather will respect this.
