smoke coming out of exhaust help

recently i started seeing lots of smoke coming out of my exhaust and was wondering why is it doing this...its a 97 gst with an injen intake, blitz bov, apexi n1 3in pipe exhaust, and 3in apexi n1 dp no cat. converter. how would i fix it so no smoke come out of it and what is the problem is it because i have no cat. converter or do i need an oil change or something.

what color smoke is it and when do you notice it happening the most?

white smoke :
caused by water evaporating in the exhaust stream. Occasional puffs [are] usually from condensation in the exhaust pipes (especially in humid areas) or a water balloon up your stove-pipe. Continual white smoke [is usually due to] a warped head/head gasket and coolant entering your combustion chambers. If you're really unlucky, might be from a cracked head.
high boost levels may promote white smoke, for some reason. Turning the boost down some cures the problem. This might be related to worn out seals on the turbo, which can leak oil into the exhaust. A bad brake booster can potentially let brake fluid into the vacuum line, which also produces white smoke.

black/grey smoke :
caused by uncombusted [unburned] fuel. Could be plugs, timing, clogged air filter, air/fuel mixture, wires, coil, etc. Start with the cheapest answer and work your way up.

blue smoke :
1) Failed oil ring(s) in the block
2) Failed valve seal(s) in the head
3) Failed turbo oil seal
"on rebuilt heads, may be poor fit between the valves and the valve guides"

Hope that list helps you out alittle bit on your smoke problems.

Ever car I've had so far has noticably smoked more just from removing the cat. But it didn't smoke real bad. If it's smoking real bad, then like the guy above me said, you can usually tell what is burning by the color or odor of the exhaust. Also when my 14b was on its way out the door, i'd smoke more then normal under full boost, but wouldn't smoke under 0 boost, and a week later the thing took a crap on me.

The smoke only comes out when its hot and only when its idling. it looks like black smoke.

forgot to mention that i notice im leaking oil where the oil return line is at and i need a new gasket for my oil pan also i need to change my head cylinder gasket. do u think that is causing the smoke?

anyone? also people are telling me its the whole exhaust system can that be the problem they told me i need a new downpipe and a whole new cat back.

mines dripping too .. mine smokes at idle a lot cause the oil drips on the hot exhaust and burns it off ..


mine also smokes a ton when i floor it .. its black but thats cause its running mega rich due to the fact i dont have an AFC.



Neither is a problem .. its just what happens.. btw the gaskets like $2.00 and that ALWAYs happens

if the smoke is coming out of your exhaust pipe its not because oil is dripping on your downpipe unless your dp has a hole in it that the oil is dripping into some how.. it sure wouldnt hurt to fix your oil leak but i doubt thats your only problem unfortunately

I too had oil leaking onto my downpipe once. But I would just smoke out from under the hood, not out the exhaust. If it's coming out of your exhaust, then its not going to be just some external leak, its something burning inside and coming out your exhaust.

since it might be something from the inside than i should get it look at asap. also at the tip of the exhaust i would see water or something in there what do u think that might be

Having a little bit of water come out of your exhaust on startup isn't always neccessarily a bad thing.

well from the looks of it i think somehow coolent is leaking into it since my head cylinder gasket needs to be change and the last time i check upder my car there was alot of oil on the dp but i wiped it off. also further looking at it in my driveway it only smoke out alot during idle and its puffs of white smoke.

I'm having a problem w/ it too after I put my catless downpipe in.

Whenever I start the car I get this nice cloud of white smoke.

Well, You said you need a headgasket, And have oil leaks. I think you need to fix ALL the problems that you have currently, And go from there. That may fix your problem. Letting each problem alone well create more problems and be harder/more expensive to fix.
Just a thought.

yea im trying to get that fix asap. i just started college so im saving up at the moment to get it fix since the head cylinder gasket is 800 bucks to fix

dude make friends with someone that knows cars and give them some beer, 50 bucks and a headgasket to do the job if you cant do it yourself.. 800 bucks is pretty damn high

what do u thik my problem is ,98 GSX a/t i see smoke and this nasty smell only when i hit boost, what could that be

and i dont think its the headgasket cause it doesn't overheat, or anti freeze is fine and my oil on my dipstick is perfect what else could it be?
