Everything checked out fine. I used a felpro composite HG and new head studs. I had the head machined and everything done. Initial start up and I'm getting smoke from the front part of the engine. Smoke comes out the exhaust as well. What is happening? Did I #### something up? It idles at 1500 as well. Haven't driven it. Its still on jack stands. I'm scared to drive it.

how long has it ran while it was smoking. can you describe the color of the smoke? maybe its just burning off some oil and coolant that spilled out when you pulled the head.

can't see the color ### its dark out. I hope thats just the case but why does it idle at 1500? NVm the idle is because its cold mybad. But it smokes, I'll check tomorrow morning. Any other thoughts are welcome. I've only run it for a min or 2. I'm too scared to let it run more unless I'm sure nothing is wrong.

It is not uncommon to have smoke after major engine work.

Oil, coolant, sealants, paint all will smoke when heated.

The oil and such on your hands from tear down, and assembly just have to burn off.

It should taper down after about the 5-10 mins, just check for puddles under the car while it is running

The only way you're going to know is if you run it. Recheck your oil and coolant lines, crank it over and keep an eye on the vitals. Check for leaks, like OP said. It's normal for residual burn off, especially on/near exhaust manifold.

Good luck DSM. :hellyeah:

update: smoke is definitely blue, some water comes out the exhaust but I believe its condensation, the car has been sitting for 3 weeks. Also, when I gas it is when there is more smoke. However, its reduced since I've ran it. Doesn't smoke as bad, only under throttle. It still smokes a bit on idle but its less noticeable but still smokes.

Could it be the turbo? When I checked for shaftplay it had no in and out but up and down. Also, its an ebay 16g that came with the car.

how many miles does the car have on it? Was a valve job done on the head? Smoking in the Engine compartment on initial start-up is normal, the tailpipe, not so much. In higher mileage cars, resealing the valves without doing anything to the rings will cause problems. the rings are used to the valves leaking, now that they dont the extra pressure on the rings can cause a failure. I've seen it more than once. check the compression wet and dry and see how much different it is.

car isn't smoking under hood anymore and its minimal out the exhaust now. Drove it around a few but my battery keeps dying so I can't drive it till I get a recharge. It pulls and drives fine, turbo boosts fine. Oil pressure is a little low on the stock gauge but those are known to be inaccurate? Temperature is normal. Pretty much driving fine except for the battery. 160k miles on the odometer.

has the PCV valve been changed? It could be allowing a small amount of oil into the motor causing smoke. My 4g61 in my hyundai burned oil through the PCV from day one after i did the rebuild. (I have a heavy foot) A new PCV should help keep it to a minimum.

So much wrong here.
A valve job will not cause the rings to go out.

A valve either seals or does not seal.

If it does not seal, a valve is burnt, or bent, or the head is warped to a point that the seat insert shift in the head casting.

If the sealing issue is small, a light skip should be noticed at idle, and appears to go away on the upper RPM. The reason for this is simple, engine speed and the time the valve is on the seat.

A bent or burnt valve will have a skip or pop to it, either in the intake or the exhaust, depending on what valve has an issue.

A head casting that is excessively warped, normally .012-.015 or more, the seat insert along with the guides, will shift in the head casting so the guide center line is not indexed to the valve seat, this issue is commonly found on the exhaust side. When the valve job is done, the effected seats will cut more on one side than the other.

Any of these valve issues can cause low compression in one or more cylinders. Also they can mask a ring issue.

If a rebuilt head is installed, and then the rings are found bad, the rings were bad when the head was first pulled.

One of the big things that will kill rings is excessive heat, a ring must transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder walls then into the water jacket.

When the ring is excessively heated it loses tension and no long contacts the cylinder bore properly. Also a prolonged lean condition can cause this.

Now a head that failed and allows coolant in the cylinder bore will rust, this rust will grind the rings down and now the rings will not seal properly.

Well the car drives fine however, I took it for a boosting run and the belts squeal under boost, probably just a bit loose on the alternator belt. It also smoked under the hood after I was done driving it under boost. Going to take it for another drive today. I just want to ensure its fine before I sell it.
