hello. im new here. going to buy a 99 gsx. i was wondering what is needed to pass a smog check in California? please answer. thanks in advance.

LOL sorry. im not sure on the mods. this is what he posted on the ad. he also has a big 16g turbo.
Greddy type s bov
greddy front mount intercooler
Rims New tires
Apexi boost manual controler
gauges
injen intake
Headers
3inch downpipe

Lose the
turbo
header not headers
3 inch down pipe
blow off valve
turn down boost controller to stock settings
Im guessing no boost gauge
injen intake just incase of a visual di** inspector
intercooler should be okay since 08 i think.
I might of left other little things. My nephew pass with flying colors. Car was a 99 gst spyder. exhaust, apexi intercooler, k n intake! I think it was luck!

if you still have a cat on and working o2 sensors you will pass... especially since you wont have to do the rollers ....

rather they'll just rev in neutral with the sniffer ... because they do not have AWD rollers for smog stations...

1) He can keep the turbo on there. It says Mitsubishi on it...
2) By header I hope you mean manifold. But doesn't need to take that off either unless it's a tubular or something with a wastegate on it.
3) Doesn't even own the car yet. And in California it's the sellers responsibility to SMOG the car before sale.

Ok thanks for all the help. I just want to make sure it passes so my dad would help me buy it. He dont want a car that wont pass smog. This is also going to be my first car and im 15 years old just for your information

you might get some problems with one of the monitors. like on mine i had 3 saying ready and 2 saying not ready. you need to have 4 of 5 on ready to pass.
if this happens then it is a royal pain. im still dealing with it. you have to go to the dealership and have them pop the monitor. our cars didnt come with it apperently. this is just what i heard. so the dealership likes to steal from us and they will charge you 90 dollars to make it say ready.
oh and you cant turn the car off cause if you do then it resets and you have to do it all over again so 90 dollars down the drain.
i dont know what code it is though.

If you ever get DSMlink or have DSMlink, there's a way you can use it to check your monitors to see if they're ready and you can even set them to ready. The dealership charges a couple hundred each time you go there to set the monitor and like you said once you turn off your car it will go back to not ready. Saving up for DSMlink or ECMlink will give you the ability to tune and monitor your car and also check your OBDII readiness without having to bring the car to any shop.

To the OP, if you have a working catalytic converter you should be able to pass the sniffer test during smog. If the exhaust manifold looks stock you will pass the visual test. The 16g looks close enough to stock. If the manifold doesn't look stock try to get a heat shield to cover it. Is the Greddy Type S BOV recirculated or vented? If it's vented you will have to recirculate it to your intake pipe. It's best if you can put the stock intake pipe with air box to pass smog. It really depends on the smog tech to see if they will pass you visually with the Type S BOV and the Injen intake. Is everything else stock in the engine bay? If you can post a photo of the engine bay we can tell you if we can see anything wrong visually.

When I was talking about DSMlink/ ECMlink I was referring to what spicoli619 posted, not directed to the OP. Spicoli619 drives a '96 Talon TSI. Depending on tkhaab_94's goals with the car, DSMlink or ECMlink is a good tool for tuning and monitoring his car anyways. Being able to do the OBDII readiness check is just a bonus part of the program.

Had that problem before I bought my car. Seller passed smog but it wasn't ready, but smog wise was okay. As long as you pass smog, state bar will okay it. You just need the paper to register the car.

wassup. thanks for all the replies and answers. well apparently the seller wouldn't answer my phone calls, text messages, or emails. his voice mail is full. if he doesnt get back to me soon i might just get a 97 GST. what are the pros and cons on both the GSX and the GST? which one is the best?

Depends on what you want to do with the car. The GSX will run quicker times at the drag strip if both are on street tires, that GS-T should get better gas millage on the freeway because it is geared higher and it should also be faster in a highway situation.

I love my GSX for auto-cross and the fact that I don't do uncontrollable burn out's every time I step on the gas. Also it is easier to get a GSX to pass smog since it doesn't go on the rollers.

as Soadwesky stated a GSX doesnt have the top the highway speed as a GST but i think that all in all a AWD is better. the speed difference doesnt come into play till you are in tripple digits. and im sure as you know these california cops will pull you over for everything. so doing 120 almost isnt worth it. considering it is a felony here to do trip digits. and getting the off the line starts that AWD's have is just amazing.

well this is going to be my first car. idk if im going to take it to the drag strip. i going to put on basic mods like TBE, intake, bov, hard pipes w/front mount intercooler and that may be all in performance. i might sell it later on and get a EVO IX or X. what would you guys recommend for a Daily Driver?

For a daily driver either the GST or the GSX will do fine. Keep searching for a car in good condition and as stock as possible. GSX is the top of the line for the DSM world, so I would choose the GSX since it has the best of both worlds: performance and traction. You can get traction with the GST, but it will take more investment in suspension mods and some sticky, sticky tires. Best of luck to you in whatever you choose.

what are the chances of AWD's passing smog? i found another GSX for sale. it has the following mods:
Greddy Type S BOV
Greddy Intercooler piping
Greddy Turbo Timer
Injen Intake
Stage 2 clutch
fidanza 10lb flywheel
short shifter
Autometer Boost gauge
Autometer A/F ratio gauge
Autometer Fuel pressure gauge
LSD rear end

um the owner said that the the car failed visual inspection because of the ic piping.

I guess. But like I said up there! If the car come turbo charged from the factory. It is okay to have an intercooler. Huge front mount, Im not sure. But my nephew did pass with the apexi intercooler kit. Must of been the place. I guess you have to have hook ups or a desperate place in need of a couple of bucks and a few cars to smog!

LSD rear end... okay....:ohdamn:

The truth, now the hardest part is finding a shop that doesn't care about visual. With the tough economic times, it should be easy.

Haha, did the seller happen to mention what color the IC pipes were? Bright yellow and the sorts with get you a big ol' fail ;)

LSD rear end... okay....:ohdamn:

And what exactly are you saying by that? AWD DSM's have a factory option for a rear LSD. Mine has one and so does a buddy of mine.
