i smell gas alot when driving, but also at idle and wot sometimes too.. so i

1. lifted back seats to smell at tank, and it isnt smelling any stronger under there. (190lph fuel pump)

2. did a boost leak test and found that the prev owner didnt put an o-ring on the hks bov flange, so i put one in there,

3. Hooked up pocketlogger and had to remove about -4% and -5% across the board on the safc

4. found prev owner stripped the bottom stud coming from the intake mani through the tb so i replaced that

5. then now i pulled the prev owners plugs and they were gapped to .030 and had TREMENDOUS carbon build up and solid white tip. so i ordered some NGK stock replacements at advanced auto and they will be here at 2:00...

but in the mean time, what else do i need to check? i know the fuel pump rewire is for electric current only, but could it still help fix my problem?? anything else? i am getting 200 miles to a tank of gas :sosad:

Check engine light coming on? Other than that, you could change your fuel filter. Everything seems to be under control.

Make sure you gap the plugs when you get them. Even if they're pregapped plugs.

yeah i had the fuel pressure solenoid light, but i just bypassed it cause i dont have to take emissions in AL. could that be the problem? i left it plugged up, but it is still bad none the less

make sure you dont have a cracked o-ring on an injector. just check between the injectors and intake manifold. i had an o-ring crack and fall off and it started out leaking gas slowly and i could just smell it barely while driving and sitting still. it finally got to the point where the o-ring completely came off. and it sprayed all over the place. thats a fire hazard waiting to happen as well. anyways, i just thought i'd throw that in there just in case you do have that problem.

how do i check my injectors?

i just cleaned my spark plugs and reset the game and drove them one last time before i got my new plugs.. and they were just as bad in 5 mins of driving as 5 hours. so i will hesitate installing my new ones untill i find my leak or whatever i have

ok, you need to pull the injectors out of the car one at a time. there's an o-ring on the bottom of each one. just make sure they are in excellent condition. also why you're in there check the o-ring on the intake manifold side. it's where the injectors sit onto the IM. so it'll be 8 o-rings. just make sure they are all in good shape.

ok i just had autozone order me some NGK BPR6EKN sparkplugs like the haynes manual said to use... instead of getting a single tip, they have double tips that dont require gapping... but the one in haynes manual and the one i pulled out of my car had single tips... do i need to take these back or will they work fine

By good shape he means they feel like rubber and they're not cracked.

The o-rings tend to turn into plastic because of how hot our cars run. Make sure they're still flexible. But, if you're pulling them out you might as well replace them. A whole new set of lower o-rings is 10 bucks.
The lower injector seals usually stick in the intake manifold, so you'll have to grab them out with some needle nose pliers.

BPR6ES is what we take. EVERY PLUG REQUIRES GAPPING. Gap them to .028-.030
By the way, I'm not yelling, I'm just making sure I get my point across :thumb:

you can use the BPR6EKN plugs as well. i had a set of these in my car as well for a while. according to Advance that is what came stock in out cars. but, the BPR6ES is what's recommended for our cars now from everyone in the dsm community.

what about the BPR7ES? cause i plan on upping the boost to 15 when i fix this problem i have.

o btw i got some fuel injector cleaner and poured it into my gas tank and no more smell! LOL...

ok i installed my 7s and in 5 miles they were just as bad as my old plugs and had a white tip, if i understand it right that means im running hot and rich but what do i check for to fix that? and my injector o-rings are fine

yes check these rings for the injectors. There are somewhat larger grommets in the intakemanifold side where the injectors sit, and they are about the size of a dime and thicker, harder rubber. I needed to replace mine as they were really soft, and didnt make contact with the manifold, causing fuel to leak occationally. Ive smelled gas on occasion. good luck man.

i just pulled my rail and injectors, and the o-rings and everything else looked fine and clean, i guess my car just sucks

I'm sure you did this but did you check the surrounding area for gas puddling up? it may look like oil because it's probably dirty. But that's what happened on my 92 the seals all looked decent, but i replaced them anyway and it never leaked again after that.

well now its not pulling when i shift under boost, it bogs, then pulls, and when i shift i hear a gun go off.... what is going on now

you are running really rich. thats why it's backfiring on you. im not gonna take a guess as to what to do though, so maybe someone else will get on here and answer this for you.

any new CEL codes?

how's your upstream[ exhaust manifold] o2 sensor? If that fails, then the ECU goes into a very rich map to keep the engine safe.

daggum... well as far as i know the o2 sensor is fine. now everything is running ok except the boost gauge has a shaky needle, and i smell gas again... i did a search of the previous owner on here and found alot of BAD problems with this car... its going to be a long uphill road for me.

thanks for all the help guys

alright i swapped out the upper o2 sensor, but i still smell the gas after driving a bit, the idle raised up to 1000 rpms, then ultimately settled to 850 rpms. is there anything else i should look for?
