I have seen that thread.. Prez was not having any problems with his SBR clutch. He was just questioning if it should look the way it did. If you read the 2nd to last post, he states that the clutch was working fine before he pulled it. Nate at SBR just told him to reinstall it and run it....I wish that was my case...

Fattie92,

Give me a call on Tuesday and we'll get this resolved and taken care of! 724-349-8417 my extension is 18.

I think you people should give these companies a chance to make the situation right before you go posting on these threads about these parts and scaring people off from buying them before you have even given the company a chance to work things out with you. Now you could have scared off many potential customers just because maybe you got a bad clutch. Sounds like maybe you are really hard on them though if you keep breaking them....

Sorry but I WANT to know all the issues with a clutch I put in my car. Even if they do make it right; it doesnt change the fact that he still has to do ALL the work, a SECOND time. with no compensation for the additional 5? hours worth of hard work to R&R? definently not anything I want to do twice.

We buy PERFORMANCE clutches so we CAN be really hard on them.. :rocks:

maybe he got a bad clutch, how many "bad clutches" will be given out?? I'd hate to get a bad one then I would have to deal with the shit he has to. WTF

I was really really debating on if i should make this thread or not. I ended up thinking to myself... as long as it stays civil, and there is no company bashing, then it should not be a problem. Plus, you see that my clutch is trash, and now you get to see how the company will handle the situation. So this might actually help the company out in more ways then one, since they are showing that they care and that they back up there product unlike ACT. There are a lot of people out there running these clutches, with NO problems. Heck i installed on in a buddies car too and he is 10% harder on his car then i am on mine. This kid launches his car atleast twice a day, and it still is holding strong! I like Slow Boy Racing, and i apologies if this thread did any type of damage to there customer base.

These threads are here to help each other out, and to share information. Apparently I am the first one on these boards to have problems with the SBR clutch. Someone else had problems with the Machv comp clutch as well. He shared his experience with us because of this thread, and because of that I'm actually going to wait this out and talk to SBR about it instead of going to a local shop and getting a disk.

Once again, SBR, I'm if this thread offended you in anyway.

I agree. I think it is great that nate from slowboy saw the thread and said hey get a hold of me and we'll take care of this. I get paranoid sometimes because so many companies do say to bad it's your problem. Even if there were a problem with the clutch it's not slowboy's or any other dealers fault. I was at slowboy for the first time about a month ago and I can honestly say that was the best experience I have ever had in a speed shop. Most places I have went to act like they are agitated when you asked for comparisons and other questions about products. Anyways I don't smell mine anymore. I can really feel it grabbing like it should.

I don't think anyone was trying to bash SBR here. I think it is a good thing he posted his experience and the pictures. Gives other people needed info and data that will help them in deciding if they wish to buy this clutch or any other products from SBR.

Also lets them see what kind of hassle they will have to deal with if there clutch does break.

SBR has a somewhat mixed reputation. My friend had a bad experience with them and they seemed less then helpful with him, however he called them on the phone. Maybe this thread is what is helping fattie.

Who knows what SBR might have done is this wasn’t posted online. Then again maybe they would have took care of him anyway.

Looks like its going to turn into a win/win for everyone involved. So far it does look like Nate @ SBR is going to take care of him which is just great. It's good for them too because now someone else might see this thread and say, o wow SBR helped that guy out unlike ACT, gee maybe I'll try that clutch now too.

I called Nate at SBR today. I have to mail them my clutch and then they will mail me out a new clutch, free of charge. ...now if i can only get them to cover my rental car id be set! LOL... yeah right, good luck with that one!

This dowel pin is sticking out too far. Or at least it looks as such from the picture. It looks like it needs to go in another 1/2" - 1." When re-installing your next clutch take the dowel pins out and coat half of it with grease (long ways), next gently put them into the engine block until the hold themselves in. Then take a wooden block and place it over the dowel pin and whack the wooden block a couple times. It should seat all the way if you do it this way. I can't tell if your rear side pin is out too far from the angel of the picture.

Then again you can never tell from a picture, they might be in all the way.

the dowel pin in that picture is not all the way back in. I took it out and just placed it back in there for the picture.

The dowel pins are only 3/4 of an inch long. So theoretically, it is impossible for it to go in another inch. They are in the engine block about 1/4 of an inch, and then the other 1/2 inch goes in the tranny.

PS... I mailed out my clutch 2 day air today. So they should have it Friday. to bad i cant have it for the weekend.

Its nice to see how sbr is handling the situation, however I would still like to know what's causing these problems. My act did the same thing to me AGAIN ( twice now in 5000 miles ) and I haven't even bothered pulling the tranny because I don't want to even deal with this since they won't cover it anyways.

Both times this happened in my car the dowel pins were installed and the flywheel step is also correct. The pressure plate I didn't replace last time the disk went ( disk only ) but I don't understand why so many people are having these stupid problems. Has anyone figured that out yet?

VENTING!!

Well......Still waiting on a disk. first i was told that as soon as they got mine, they would send me out a disk ASAP... They received the disk last Friday..I called Monday to see when my new disk would be here, and i was told they they have none in stock and that they should have some by Wednesday. OK, whatever, ill wait.. So i call them today, hoping it has been shipped... NOPE! Still no clutches in stock. One of the guys called Comp Clutch and asked them when they are to expect a shipment, they said middle of next week sometime!! Here i am in a rental, with a 400 dollar bill so far!, and i have to wait till next week MAYBE to get it? This same situation happend when i ordered the 3500 kit in the first place... It took a month to get it to my house! I CAN NOT wait any longer. I drove to AMS (should have done in the first place,) and bought a ACT street disk. By the time i get the SBR one, ill have damn near a 6-700 rental bill... This is one expensive clutch job!

Oh, I also asked about the disk and why a spring popped out.. SBR told me that Comp Clutch told them that "it just happens sometimes...."

So far, i am very very unhappy with the situation.

You should have asked if they had a diffrent disk they could send you for a replacement. They may have been able to send you a upgraded disk. The C/C pressure plates are the same. Plus C/C will ship it direct to your house. No need for it to go to SBR then to you.

The next time I install a clutch in a hopped up car I am going to safety wire the springs to the hub so they cant pop out.

I dont know why nobody does this from the factory...

just want to thank you for starting this thread and keeping us updated. I need to buy a clutch soon and have been making my decision, this helps.

SORRY for it being a PITA for you, it sucks to buy a $400+ clutch kit, have it break because...."sometimes it just happens," rent a car to drive, AND have to do a clutch job in a DSM a second time with no compensation!!!

EDIT: MNGSX: I think this could be a good topic for a seperate thread. I've heard of people buying discs with no springs at all also. But I would like to read more info/input on wiring the springs in. Personally I dont understand why they are not sealed into the position they are suppose to be....since this happens to be a common problem.

I actually asked if they can just open a kit and give me a disk out of there but i was told that they just sold the last two yesterday... I didn't think of asking for another disk like a ACT for some reason. OH well... my car will be back on the road tomorrow night!

ALSO, i just want to make this clear, I am NOT trying to bash SBR, nor do i want this thread to turn into that. If you want to know my real feelings about the company, you can PM me, or IM me on AOL, my sn is fattie92

You were borderline on the rules there, but I don't like a "certain company," because they took 9 weeks and an a email fight that ended when a "certain employee" called me a b*tch. At which point I demanded my the put the money back on my CC and they tried charge me a 35% restocking fee. Then I denied them from my CC and I got all my money back HA!!!!!

Good luck with your next install bro!

Outside observer...

The clutch failed, the company is tring to do the right thing. That is a good thing.

Them not having the part individually in stock. Questionable. (not good not bad)

Them knowing they had some in "KIT" form and not popping it open and sending once they learned of shipping delays or whatever. NOT good.

Them (once they realize that they will not be getting another one for some time) offering a different manufacturer. NOT a good thing.

So I am not bashing them in any form, just posting my opinions, and how I think situations SHOULD be handled... I would not buy from them in the future.

As the poster said, they offered to make it right, but when you are in a rental you do not have time to wait for them to get thier stuff straight and make it right.

I too have had problems similar to this, the fact however is if you plan to mod your car you WILL have problems and downtime. You really should have a backup car of some sort or plan ahead for a car you could borrow if something were to happen. If you don't want to do this then don't mod your car. It's not anyone's fault really that this all happened, but just think with all the money you are spending on a rental you could have bought some piece of junk beater to drive around for situations like this. The situation is unfortunant for you but if you can't deal with it then don't try to make an unreliable car even more unreliable by putting aftermarket parts on it.

I'm still curious what causes these problems though ... I've had a few act clutches do the same thing to me with no apparent cause.

Ha yea that car is sweet. I got a 1990 cavalier 2 years ago with 147k on it for $100. It was losing charge ( guy thought it was the alternator ) and the temperature guage always went up really high. ( he didn't know why that was happening ) I bought it for $100 and began to work on it. Turns out there is a fuse in the cabin that's for both the alternator AND the fan and guess what?! All I had to do was replace it and the car ran PERFECT ever since. Put 10k on it already. :thumb: Not bad for $100.
