How's it going guys. This is my first post, I'm not too new to tuner cars and stuff, I've been around the corners here and there.

First thing's first, I've got a 98 Eclipse GS 420A motor, 136k on stock right now. I've set my mind to building a new motor for my car. I started about 3 weeks ago, purchased cams, crank, and a few other little things. A few days ago, I got an offer from someone in Oregon for a 420A Shortblock, built by Slowboy racing. I read a few posts about slowboy and how terrible their service is, it's not from them this time, it is directly from someone that bought it from SBR to put in his Eclipse but he totaled it before he could put it in. He's getting rid of it and he said it is a $2500 block, I told him I can't afford that, my build was expected to be about $1400. He replied saying something along the liens of him needing money and that he can do $1400 and we split the shipping because I live all the way in Chicago, IL.

The specs for the motor: .020 Over JE 8.8:1 Pistons, JE rings, Eagle Rods, ARP Main and rod bolts, New oil pump, 95 block, ACL main and rod bearings.

Now, I am planning on a turbo build. Here's what it is going to be like:

1- Build the motor in a few months, get a full block ready and assembled and timed and ready to drop in, as well as a transmission rebuild kit as well as a stage 3 clutch. On top of that, have about $300 on side for any extra crap that occurs, maybe I need some extra hoses or whatnot. Once I have all this, I will take out the motor and tranny, have a buddy of mine rebuild it with the kit, once it is rebuilt, put it back in there with the new clutch, then put the new motor in the bay.

Here's the list of what my build was going to have:

SHORTBLOCK

A. The Slowboy racing shortblock with: .020 Over JE 8.8:1 Pistons, JE rings, Eagle Rods, ARP Main and rod bolts, New oil pump, 95 block, ACL main and rod bearings.

or B. (My original Idea) Find a block with around 100k miles, have it bored and cleaned at a shop, remanufactured crankshaft, Eagle rods, Wiseco forged pistons, and engine bearings.

HEAD

Cometic Head gasket, find a head with around 100k miles, have it ported and polished at a shop, probably Stage 1 porting, Brian Crower Stage 2 or 3 Cams, stock valves(unless I get a head for cheap with bent valves, I will put in PEP Stainless steel valves, Brian Crower valve springs and titanium retainers.

Gasket kit for both ends off of DSMGraveyard.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION

As sad as this sounds, I was looking at an Ebay tranny rebuild kit for about $400. Let me knwo what you suggest on that. The clutch, XTD STAGE 3 CLUTCH & X-LITE FLYWHEEL 93-99 ECLIPSE GSX off of Ebay as well.

The turbo part, I was thinking about doing once the engine was broken in. I would take a few months to build some cash to get a kit and then install it.

Now this is a big project for me that I would like to do, I know it isn't cheap and you will say that I'm better off selling my car and getting a GSX. GSX's are already done, there's no fun to them, I want to build something that I know what I did and i know how everything works.

MY main concern is about everyone's thoughts. Please let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. I am dropping a $550 deposit mid this week on the Slowboy racing motor unless I get told otherwise. I just want to know if my planned setup will be a go for a turbo. The 8.8:1 ratio seems pretty good but I'd like some more thoughts on that. Please feel free to comment and shoot me messages for anything. Thanks.

Okay, your right. Most of the guys on this site are going to tell you to keep the 420a for a dd and go with a gsx. I am kinda with you on this one. I would like to see more 420a turbo builds. And yes make sure that the SBR shortblock is legit and don't set yourself up to get scammed online. Happens more then you think.

As far as your build goes. You need to decide what turbo you want to run/can afford. Also what are your goin to be tunning with? Safc? And what kinda of power or lbs/min are you looking to run. With a smaller turbo, higher compression pistons, and e85 you could retain great street-ability, fast spool and make great power. Just a thought.

Don't be so concerned about what everyone else thinks about your project. Its your car do what you want. Accept the advice that you like, reject what you don't. You are the only one driving this car so enjoy it how you want. And ask youself what you want the car to do. Then go from there!

I'm building a 420A turbo motor right now as well, and honestly if you have already started buying parts just keep on the path your going. That way you know everything is legit and 100% the way you want it to be.....you can find 420A longblocks that need a rebuild cheap all over the place that way you can build you engine over time then swap it out when your done.

Also the clutch you have listed will NOT work the 420A has a modular clutch set up and it not the same as the GSX, the best I found was a stage 2 setup but I had to search for it under a neon search

Just be sure to get a NICE solid block to start off with because it will be seeing boost all the time. Shop around, too. There are tons of 420A blocks to be looked at. Invest in an LSD for the transmission.

From what I can see, your doing pretty good so far. I highly recommend you write a list of what you want/need BEFORE you buy anything. Also look up reviews on the parts you buy or plan to buy. Better safe than sorry.....

BTW, what turbo do you have in mind? What will you use for tuning?

I'm not sure what turbo yet. Do you have any suggestions of turbos or turbo kits?

I'm looking at the CX Racing GT35 Turbocharger - T4 Flange and get a piping kit off of Ebay.

NO NO NO!

That is a hit or miss idea. Some have ran ebay turbo's with success, but most just blow after seeing anything over 10-15 psi. Picture it like this, you can buy 2 or 3 ebay turbos (or maybe more) before you get one that is half way reliable. Or just save the money and buy one from a reputitable dealer like FP, BW, PTE, ect. that will last a lifetime! In the end you spend the same amount of money.

Some stuff on ebay is fine for a budget build, but turbos are not!

purplerocket69 I have talked to this guy many of times, Hes also sold a ton of parts to people on 2gnt.com and has a good reputation. He will no cheat you out on anything. It is a awesome deal on the block, because your going to spend more money in the long run buying all the parts this motor already has. I say buy it. Again the seller is a good guy

OK, so I did buy the block, it was a good deal that I just cant turn down. I need a head now...anyone got an extra head? I'm about to start working on that as soon as I can find a head in good shape that I can port.

goddd i wish i can find deals like that!!!!! lucky man... good luck!! keep posted cause im wantin to build my 420a soon... i like what is called "bein different" thats y im doin the 420a idk bout anyone else but.... yea.. and im the only 420a-t thats around macon county actually the first.. teehee go me!!

I have a question what is a good deal from slowboy? I consider a bad deal $.50 is not a good deal if you buy someting that's not right it leads to frustration. Just don't stop the import scene if the engine is not what its cracked up to be coming from a shop that has the reputation of pulling a fast one. I am speaking from first hand experience trust me;)

All I can say to you on the block is to check and make sure the oil galley plugs are installed. When I ordered mine from SBR, I didn't find out they weren't until after 10 quarts of oil and re-seating my oil pump. That was straight from SBR. He says he never installed the block so he may or may not know if they have been installed already.

I took it back off, re-did the RTV, and put it back on.

EDIT: Reason I did it is because there's an oil galley port right above the pump. When I pissed the first few quarts on the floor, I noticed the oil pump was drenched with oil so I quickly assumed it was the culprit. Thinking I may have left the gasket out or sealed it wrong, I removed it and did everything all over just to find out I wasted a couple hours of my life when I tried starting here again.

Block now sits on a motor stand in my garage :) . Now, I just need a diagram of the 420A to go off of so I can see what I'm missing on it such as pulleys, and sensors.
