A 6 spd trans is for FUEL ECONOMY. 1-4 are close ratio, 5 is a highway gear, and 6 is the second highway gear. It is NOT so you can go 8 bazillion MPH down the road.

No, there is no "6-speed Eclipse" transmission out there. Only way is if someone had Quaife manufacture on for them. Mitsu did not make a 6-speed for the Eclipse...ever.
The intial poster probably saw a car with a 3000GT VR4 shift knob on it. Just because the shifter says "1-2-3-4-5-6-R" doesn't mean it has 6 gears. The 3KGT knob will fit right on. This is like thinking my old 16V Scirocco I had when I was 16 went 160 mph because the speedo went up that high.
As far as 6-speeds having a higer top speed (taller gearing) or "just being closer ratio" both are right/wrong. A 6-speed can be either, just depends on what the manufaturer/builder wants out of it.

so what might be involved in putting in a racing 6 speed, like an xtrac or quaife... those are pure sequential beuty, forget the fact that they are 5 grand, what kind of fabrication would be involved?
