It was a joke, but you CAN remove the synchros, get a thinner gear, and then put in a 6th, there are kits for the Skoobies that were ment for the rally and auto cross events, not that expensive if you can do the work yourself.

You have to rev match (within reason) and double clutch everygear, but it works.

A 6 spd trans is for FUEL ECONOMY. 1-4 are close ratio, 5 is a highway gear, and 6 is the second highway gear. It is NOT so you can go 8 bazillion MPH down the road.

Sometimes this is true, but not on most imports. Consider the Celica GTS, with 3k RPM @ 70mph, the 6th gear is not as ferocious an over-drive as most would lead you to believe.

yeah word, i know the six speed in most sport cars is not primarily intended for feul economy
the fact is it just allows for better acceleration, and gear choice, feul economy comes from puting it in the highest gear to get the engine to rev less

yes there is six speed eclipse in europe you got to admit an eclipse suck withouth six speed un like a rsx

i thought 1gens were geared for 186. and the non turbos were heared for like 160.

No, there is no "6-speed Eclipse" transmission out there. Only way is if someone had Quaife manufacture on for them. Mitsu did not make a 6-speed for the Eclipse...ever.

The intial poster probably saw a car with a 3000GT VR4 shift knob on it. Just because the shifter says "1-2-3-4-5-6-R" doesn't mean it has 6 gears. The 3KGT knob will fit right on. This is like thinking my old 16V Scirocco I had when I was 16 went 160 mph because the speedo went up that high.

As far as 6-speeds having a higer top speed (taller gearing) or "just being closer ratio" both are right/wrong. A 6-speed can be either, just depends on what the manufaturer/builder wants out of it.

DSSA is exactly right, production road going 6 speeds like the T56 have a double overdrive ie. 5th .89, 6th .50. Quaife, Xtrac, Albins etc make 6 speeds for motorsports. Perfect example, 6 speed quaife box in a G2 ProRally Golf that competes here in the USA. Car has well over 240hp and 6 gears, does it go 348mph? Hell no, its barely cracks 120mph.

Dont beleive the 6 speed bs and dont waste you money on one.

I wonder what the guy will think when he finds out that his tranny is about to goto shit on him. I just hope you weren't going down the road in 5th gear and try to goto 6th (reverse). Sometimes even mechanics amaze me! :p

so what might be involved in putting in a racing 6 speed, like an xtrac or quaife... those are pure sequential beuty, forget the fact that they are 5 grand, what kind of fabrication would be involved?

Depends on which transmission you use. Other than "bolting it up", some require you to use a different t-case and rear.

If you can find a sequential for $5K, sign me up. Used RalliArt ones are in the neighborhood of $9K to $15K.

good god, that is for professionals clearly, ah it is sad, but at least RRE is working on a sequential shifer

there is a product out that turns any tranny that uses cables into a sequtial set up you still have to use the clutch but no misses gears and you get a sweet gear indicator. also if you convert to a full dogbox type tranny and build in an ignition kill than BAm you have a full sequntial box for lesss than 9k. this set up is most likely going in the eclipse.

close to 7k for tranny build up and another 1500-2000 for shifter
