There are several \"hacks\" to the mass airflow meter that will solve a plethora of problems that plague these cars. Take the whole aircan out of the car, and remove the filter. On the intake side, you will see 2 honeycombs. Remove the lower one. Below it, you will see a large plastic screw set up into the bottom of the air canal. Back it out a bit. On the other side of the MAF, there is a star-shaped siliencer, remove it.
(An example)

the problem im having is the honey combs... when i remove the lower honey comb do i just remove the metal honey comb looking part or do i remove the whole inner peice?( that holds both the honey combs) and try to remove the plastic that surrounds the honey comb and the metal comb peice? or just the metal?

and also it says "Below it, you will see a large plastic screw set up into the bottom of the air canal. Back it out a bit" i cannot seem to find this screw...i have not removed the lower comb yet but you can see right through it and i cant see any screw or anything that looks like a screw....

truth be told, maf hacks are not all what they say to be. when removing the honeycombs it will make the maf have trouble reading the air as the honeycombs straiten the flow pattern to make it easy to read air, you can check here --> Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page click intake and scroll down to maf and click the links on the right to view, do not remove the top honeycomb only do the lower and one last thing i would not mess with the screw as i have seen some cars react negatively to the adjustment and then have trouble at idle.

MAS hacking is "old school", back before we had good 2G, 3G, or EVO MAS options. The results of hacking a 1G MAS are VERY unpredictable. Its not too bad to only remove the lower honeycomb, as GVR-4's already come that way from the factory. But, its going to lean your idle out >15%, while only adding ~2% more airflow before overrun. The screw also only really affects the idle, so its not worth messing with. How much boost are you trying to run?
