What are some signs/symptoms of a dieing auto trans? Mine has been acting a little funky lately, and I'm hopin' it's not on its way out:( What are some signs that your auto trans is about to go?

Shifting problem would be the first sign. Can't build enough pressure to engage different gears and not being able to hold gears like a slipping clutch.

Although uncommon, a transmission can go out at any time without any warning, signs, or symptoms. Sometimes its sluggish going into gear, for example, park to drive. It can also be at fault internally, you can check this by flushing the tranny, which should not have any metal shavings in it, and should not be black(burnt), if this is present then your transmission is definitely in danger. Also, and a slightly more noticable problem is slipping. Slipping is exactly as he described above, the transmission falls in and out of gear as it pleases, sometimes impacted by hot/cold and sometimes just random. Another way to determine is improper shift points, if it shifts too early/late there may be a problem with the fluid level. If I were you, I would change the fluid as that has a direct impact on the shift points anyways. If your worried about something being wrong with it, it may not directly be the transmission at fault, that is what sucks about diagnosing tranny symptoms unless the fluid is as I described. If you can provide a clearer definition of what is going on with it, perhaps we can give you a better answer about your specific problem. Idle surge is a very common problem at the shop I used to work at, people would come in saying the transmission is at fault when its just a simple vaccuum or egr problem. Hope this helps.

Agree w Shadow. Everyone was telling me ## tranny is going..
And my current problem is the EGR (like he mentioned) i gota take care of a trans fluid change. I had couple vac leaks that was making my car (currently is) sluggish...So check that out.

First thing you might do, and the cheapest route.. check the fluid. As far as transmissions go, overfilling is just as bad as underfilling so make sure you properly check the level.. start it up,..let it run for about 5 minutes or until warmed up..get back to us with the fluid level. How many miles does it have on it?

EDIT- Check fluid while car is in neutral not park

..Just so everyone's clear on this.....

The DSM AT trans NEEDS to be in NEUTRAL when checking the AT fluid (NOT PARK).
