Ok so my friends girl bought a 98 GS and the guy that owned it before, supposedly bored out the block or did a bad rebuild and she paid 4k for it, well on the way back they were driving it over a pass, and it was boosting 25psi and threw a rod, so im wondering if this thing is really worth $1500, I haven't really looked at it, but they had 4 people with them, and everyone of them said it ran great before it threw the rod... i can get a reman'd engine from napa for 2600... but i just dont know if its really worth the money for a project car. Let me know what you guys think haha I think it is because the turbo, and trans are supposedly good, and the rims and interior are supposedly immaculate... Just want some more knowledgable input

Thanks guys! Much Appreciated!

I will update as I find out more stuff about it!

Also AWD Conversion possible?

Projects are only worth the money if you're doing it because you actually like working on the car, which you will be.

So if you want to spend the time and money beyond the "$2600" for a napa engine.(LOL)

Do you know anything about DSMs already? If not you ought to steer clear, or just pick up a decent GST/GSX to learn on.

LOL i know abit... and i love working on cars and am a Kia tech (yes kia ### i know) but still learning and working on imports every day... I really want another dsm (if you consider a stealth a dsm LOL) but idk if i can justify 1500$ on a car that at the very minimum needs a new short block... I'd love working on it and would devote alot of money and time into it idk ill look over it better and see what i really need for it then go from there, and I cant do the fab for an awd conv but i can probably do most of everything else

And the napa engine was just a reference, id probably get a 4G63 offf ebay or something... ill post up a pic or 2 when i go look at it tomorrow

If you're sure of it, 25psi is a lot hopefully it was setup correctly. If not, you could be in a world of hurt with hack jobs etc

FYI GS is the N/A 4G63. Has it been converted to turbo or is an actual GS-T

Good luck and pictures would help

Honestly I couldnt tell you if its a gs or gs-t i beleive it was converted, but at this point in time i dont know, but if im gonna buy it and have to replace the block im gonna go ahead and do heads as well, my biggest issue is the awd conversion... i do live in colorado so we get good ammounts of snow and i want to be able to take it out whenever... , hopefully i can look it over and give some better input cause at this point in time i probably just look like a tard haha

further info: i dont want to build a 10 second car, i want to build a show/street car but also be able to run low-mid 13's aswell as abit of road coursing thats really all i want out of it...

Thanks again guys

if am not mistaking the GS is a 420A motor 180 degrees orientation

dont know what that means haha does it matter what engines in it if im just gonna drop a whole new long block in?

i know theres like 6 bolt and 7 bolt? 6 bolt is 4g63 and 7 bolt is 4g64? not sure what "bolts" they mean.... my best guess would be how many bolts to the trans? Haha newbie is a good title to me, but hey gotta start somewhere

*Crap sorry about that I got mixed up with the 1G's

On that note I didn't know a 420A was used for that much boost, dayum

Don't worry about 6/7 bolt if it is the 420A, that is only a 4G63 thing. It refers to how many bolts fasten the flywheel/flexplate to the crankshaft

Both the gs and rs have the 420a non turbo motors.

Easy way to see what motor you have. Of the oil cap is on the left its a 420a. If its on the right it's a 4g63. Both 7 and 6 bolts are a 4g63 motor also.

Right is passenger side and left is drivers side?

only the 1g came with a 4g63 N/A, the 2g has a 420A,4G63 or 4G64 which only came in the spyder model.

Also not the 6 bolt or 7 bolt engine will fit that car, unless you get a 4g63 off an Evo

So i wouldnt be able to swap a 4g63 into it? That doesnt make sence... whats different space wise in an engine compartment between a gs-t and a gs?

yea but theres no way ill be able to buy a gsx LOL so hard to find for less then 4k around here

ok nvm i take that back ill just save up and go to denver and get a gsx thanks everyone for your input haha sorry for wasting your time :)

LOL didnt look under the hood, but ill have her send me some pics tomorrow, if its the 4g63 ill probably buy it, if not ill just go get me a gsx OMG

I feel really retarded. I just now understood the original posters question and I've screwed up the trim levels so I have been pretty much no help.

I'm going to bed, long day at the lake I guess

4g64 only on spyder gsts and gsxs. The spyder gs and rs had the 2.4. Essentially a bored out 420a.

:ohdamn:

The Spyder came in only two versions. The GS and GST, never a GSX or RS. The GST has a turbo 4g63 while the GS has a NA SOHC 4g64. Both are FWD only. The 4g64 is a stroked and bored version of the 4g63, nothing even close to the 420a.
