SHIFter problems!

Okay so i bought a b and m short shifter and have it installed and everything
but now i cant get into with get right it feels and looks like my 5th is were 3rd is
like it goes into gear its just a pain and isnt in the same place
i was told to adjust the shifter cables
how do i do that??

there are adjustment by the shifter on the cable them self, now i have never adjusted the cable before, but that a place i would try,
