hey guys,
so... today me and my dad were driving in my 97 gst and all of a sudden the check engine light comes on but the car has been driving fine. i wasnt romping on the car either. i was shifting at 2500-3000 and i didnt get into much boost if any. we were just cruising. then about 10 miles after that, the engine begins to make a clunking type noise, kind of how diesle engines sound when they rev a little. it sounds like metal clanking so we head home. at a stop light, the car begins to surge. the rpms go from like 300 to 1500-2000 continuously so i try to pull over but the car has lost almost all power. i turn off the car and its smoking. i pop the hood and oil is all over. we let the car cool down for a few minutes and slowly get back home. thank God we were close. but this is the wierd part, we let the car sit and come back to it about 3-4 hrs later. we crank it to see if we can locate the noise but the engine runs smooth!? it ran like nothing had ever happend and there is NO check engine light. what the heck is going on? sorry for the long post but i tried to give as much detail. hope yall can help.

Never continue driving the car when you hear sounds like that. You could have easily lost your engine. Hell, you still might have lost your engine. Get a scanner and pull that code to start. Then get underneath and find where that oil is coming from. I wouldnt run it again until I figured that out.

Did you try to locate where the oil came out of? Dipstick popped out? My guess is you had too much pressure being built up. Check you PCV valve. While you're at it, check the coolant level and make sure it's optimal.

the dipstick didnt pop out. the code should be in the computer right, even though the CEL is off now? i dont know ### the heck is going on. i heard about motors from overbore the come with a warranty. i read some posts about them its kind of mixed opinions

The code will still be in the ECU. Its going to be the FIRST thing you should know, itll tell you what was going on before this happened.

If you cant see something obvious under the hood with the oil everywhere.... Start looking around!

The code will still be there as long as you don't disconnect the battery. Reading the code is the first step.

How much oil is in there now?
When the CEL came on, did you notice low oil pressure?
And certainly find out where that oil came from if possible.

I would drain the rest of the oil and see if there is any metal shavings in it. If the engine got low and damaged the bearing, it could have started to make the noise you were describing. It would get better on a cold start up since the bearing then had thicker and more oil on them. Not trying to scare you but I had it happen to me... except I was going down the interstate and couldnt hear it thanks to my exhaust, so I lost the whole engine :(
