I am in the market for a 16g (dont post classifieds in response) and I am going down the list of available ones on the classifieds page. I am just curious.. why is it that all of the ones for sale have only been ran for 300-1,000 miles? that's like 1week-1month of driving your car after getting that turbo and you're all ready to sell it?

I was thinking, maybe it's because the supporting mods you buy for a 16g can support a 20g or something larger? Just curious because I don't want to get ripped off..

Thanks guys

Some guys upgrade, Half are prob telling the truth, half are lying. There is no way to gauge how many miles are on it. just get detailed pics, make sure there isn't any play. Personally, I dont think i'd buy a second hand turbo when one could be had for under $500 new, its too important of an item to buy used. Maybe if it was a $1000+ dollar turbo. If i couldnt afford a new turbo, I guess I'd buy from someone that had a legitimate sounding post. 10,000 miles isnt alot for a turbo that was running stock boost levels, but it is alot for running 25psi all the time. There are so many what if's and factors that need to be thought up, for an extra 150-200 dollars, you'd have a better piece of mind.

I bought my big16g from a friend with 28k miles and I could have sold it saying it had 500 miles. No shaft play and no oil or dirt on the housing. Buying a used turbo is a hard thing to do. Just hope that you get someone who is honest and tell's you that they actually drove the crap out of it other than, had it for 500 miles and babied it. No one buys a turbo to baby it.

Well it seems that you are already thinking ahead so I say find someone selling the turbo nearby, and go check it out first hand, try to move the shaft, if it plays, leave. You don't HAVE to buy from anyone, not until you feel ready, kind of like buying your car. And you wont have the turbo too long if you are already thinking 20g. Good luck.

I know alot of guys upgrade quickly but I think alot of guys aren't totally honest about the k's on the turbo. I've had my evoIII on for about 9K and could easily say it only has 500 miles on it as it has zero shaft play & there isn't even rust on the turbine housing yet. If you buy used make sure you check the shaft play. As has been said miles isn't the only factor and a new 16g is in the $500 range if you get a used one that craps out after a couple k by the time you get it rebuilt it will cost you more then a new one. I think alot of guys upgrade before they get the full potential out of these turbos. They don't have the proper supporting mods and then their not happy with the performance. I was almost in the 50 trim boat myself, but then I upgraded to a fmic & a bov that doesn't leak & now I think I'm gonna keep this thing abit longer :thumb: . Add some cams, abit more boost and maybe a sheet metal intake mani & I think I should be happy for awhile. I can already pull on a 2000+ corvette from a roll so I must be making some power :D
