all 16g's evo3 16gs??

so i had a friend recently tell me that all 16g turbos are evo3 16gs? from what i've read and heard there are three kinds of 16g turbos..
s16g > small
b16g > big
e316g>evo3

in order from performance wise worst to best. am i right? him right?:confused:
 
Your friend is wrong. There are indeed several different 16g variants, as well as some hybrid 16g's out there made by different vendors.
 
assuming these are stock turbos, s16g= good power faster spool & increased boost over 14b and 500 cfm air flow, big 16g= slower spool than s16g, more boost than s16g, 550cfm air flow, evo3 16g= slighty slower spool than the other 2, and pretty much the same as big 16g but bigger compressor wheel.. (slighty)
 
thanks a lot for clearin that up for me. i've tryed tellin him but it'll be a lot easier to jus showm this thread haha. extreme-elements your reply helped alot thanks. always thought there was a bigger difference between the b16g and e316g
 
Yep, many different types of 16g's.. As far as a big 16g flowing 550cfm, I'm not sure about that because thats exactly what an e3 flows but I could be wrong.. What would be the point in getting an e3 though vs a b-16g if they flow exactly the same??

I don't even consider the Evo III wheel to be bigger at all. By measurement, the Evo III 16G wheel is .010" larger....that's the thickness of two sheets of notebook paper.


What would be the point in getting an e3 though vs a b-16g if they flow exactly the same??
They flow the same in terms of compressor efficiency....however, the Evo III will yeild a quicker spool due to the fact that the compressor blades are thinner, and the Evo III's turbine shaft is made of Inconel (lighter). The Evo III's exhaust housing is also lighter than that of a Big 16G, and features a 2.5" outlet compared to the Big 16G's 2" outlet.

Keep in mind the thinner compressor blades of the Evo III 16G would also be more fragile than a Big 16G's; if you're prone to drawing things into your intake, you may want to consider the Big 16G for this reason.

The same is true of the eBay knockoff 16G's....their compressor wheels have the same exact size dimensions of an Evo III wheel, but the knockoff's compressor blades are THICKER and the wheel itself is HEAVIER than that of even the plain Big 16G. In theory, a knockoff 16G would spool slower than a MHI Big 16G, and MUCH slower than a MHI Evo III 16G.
 
This is great info, I have an Evo III 16g sitting at home waiting to be installed, it's good to know what the pro's and con's are.
