Hey guys noob here. I'm buying a 91 vr4 galant soon and was hoping I could get some info. I'm a mustang guy and know about performance and turbos but very new to the import thing. I know the car is all wheel drive and turbo. Its considerd a 1g correct? Same basic drive train as a first gen gsx talon or eclipse? Anyway any basic info on what parts will transfer over ect.

My end goal is just a fun quick daily driver for as cheep as possible. I'd like to do some basic suspension and brake upgrades.

Any info or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

The VR4 isn't even technically a DSM. The drive train is similar in ways but very different since the rear wheels turn (slightly) as well. The 1g DSM is 90-94 Eclipse, Laser, and Talon.

As for the parts that change over the motor is for the most part the same as the 1g if I recall correctly.

Just a word of warning, a lot of parts can end up being pricey and hard to find for the GR4 as very very few were made and a lot of them aren't even in a drivable state anymore.

The good news is the GR4 came with larger injectors than DSMsLOL
 
Like what kid of parts? I'm not trying to make a 600 hp beast out of this thing. End goal will be just basic stuff 16g turbo around 16 psi with all supporting mods. Front mount maybe some cams ect.

What about brakes and suspension. Are there any easy cheep upgrades?
 
I would definitely suggest joining galantvr4.org. Tons of good info, best place to find used and new parts. Also a lot of good write ups for upgrades and mods. Suspension wise I picked up a set of stock evo8 Struts along with some swift lowering springs for under $200 used with low miles for my gvr4. I've also used a lot of parts I had laying around from my 2g's, so a lot of parts will swap over atleast motor wise. My next upgrades will be the 5 lug swap and brakes then Pm's to entire car. Anyway good to see another gvr4 on here and someone wanting to take care of it. Post up some pics when you get it and what number car it is. :)
 
Thanks guys I will check out those other forums. I went to one vr4 specific site but it didn't seam very active.

I will post up some pics when I it cleaned up. I plan on fixing whatever little things and maintainence issues that need to be addressed first. The thing has almost 200k on it and has been neglected. But for $500 I can't complain.
 
yeah for sure do all the basic maintnance, fluids, hoses, accesory belts, plugs/wires and if you dont know when the last t-belt has been done do it. As far as modding goes, first i would get a boost gauge and a wideband, then you can start modding more safley from there. Congrats on the find those cars are rare.
 
Under hood the 1g and vr4 are alike. The vr4 uses the later maf setup. The vr4 has larger injectors stock.
But the engine its self is the same so the performance parts are the same.

This one mentions some of the slight differences between the two ie. T-stat housing one of the motor mounts ecu map all minor stuff that really doesnt apply to you since you have the whole car and arent swapping engines between the two.

Curious what made you switch?

Not switching. Still got my fox. Its a fully built car and will be up and running soon. Should see high 10's 1/4. I have always apreciated anything clean and fast. My cousin had a low 12 sec 2g talon. So I was somewhat familiar with what they can do.

I've been planning on buying a new daily driver for awhile now with the following criteria. Something deferent. Respectable fun and reliable. I noticed the car a few months ago sitting for 2 months in my apartment complex parking lot with a flat tire. So I left a note and the owner called with a price if 500. Car runs great and drives decent for a 200k mi car. Can't pass that up.

I live in a small town where there aren't a lot of imports and a lot of people have the if its not a v8 its slow mentality. I'm super excited to see the look on their face when I rape them at a light in this 4 door grocery getter looking car.
