Okay, everybody talks about S-AFCs and DSMLINKS and they all talk about tuning and controlling A/F and all that stuff. I am just wondering which to get or are they different? I want to get the best system possible, yes I may overshoot but what is the best system not over like a 1000 dollars. And if they are different, what is different about them and it is it really important to have those differences?

dsmlink uses a laptop to change the a/f curves of the ecu. also the ecu must be a 95 eprom only, cause that is the only ecu that will save any changes to the code, any other ecu will just overwrite them. plus the whole setup costs more, but has more options and for the more advanced. dsmlink is also its own logging program, though its still up to the tuner to change any settings.

a safc2 or piggy back is smaller and easier to use. just adjusts fuel at certain rpm points to change youre fuel curve. it uses the signal from the map sensor and converts it then sends that to the ecu to control the fuel. basically telling the ecu how to run the fuel based on what you tell it to do. this is only good to a certain point though. with this setup, you will need a seperate means to read your a/f curves to tune. visit www.pocketlogger.com and obdII logging for further details. you basically get a palm pilot and a cable and it will read all sorts of engine data that the tuner will have to decide what it all means, then do the changes onto the safc. but the safc is easier for beginners.

id go with dsmlink if i could get a laptop and ecu for cheap. if not, safc+datalogger is your next viable solution, had for maybe 400 bucks

So for my 98 GSX, I could switch out an EPROM ECU and then hook up a laptop and dsmlink to the ecu? How powerful a laptop would I need? I got one from the like early 90's and it works as my computer for microsoft word and stuff like that. Thanks guys.

I run DSMLink on my little 233MMX just fine. DSMLink also gives you the option of controlling timing, nitrous, and getting rid of those pesky check engine lights. If your willing to spend up to $1k, its the best bet, if your looking under $500, AFC works well for what it is.

More detailed DSMLink info

DSMLink had me sold when I knew about these things:

1) DSMLink can be installed in well under an hour for first timers. No wiring skills are needed.

2) Tons of support online in the DSMLink forums. The creators and admins are VERY helpful as well as many of the fellow DSMLink users.

3) I LOVE the no-lift-to-shift, the CEL light on engine knock, and high coolant temp. Also the option to ignore certain CEL lights, such as when you remove your emissions hoses and you need to have your car inspected, they wont see the CEL and wonder what is up.

4) The injector size compensation beats the AFC's method of tuning for bigger injectors any day. Plus DSMLink handles larger injectors (correct me if I'm wrong)

5) It only costs a couple more hundred $$ to get DSMLink (If you have to buy an EPROM, which runs for $250 AT MOST) Not to mention they dropped the prices for the 2g drastically since they have released it for the 1g. I paid $620 total shipped to get the EPROM socket service done by them. The price of a new AFC, plus a Palm + the logging software/cable = VERY close to the same price for DSMLink.

6) Just the idea its a logger + tuning device in one, and you can tune way more than the AFC can.

Over all, this buy is VERY well worth it. You do not HAVE to own a Laptop/Palm to use DSMLink, you can always borrow a friends and have it installed and running on your car on the laptop in less than 5 minutes :)

AFC
----------

You can tune only 12 points (6 if you buy the AFC1) in the RPM band.

To install it you have to wire ALOT of wires into the ECU, which I advise you to rarely cut/splice/vampire into any of the ECU wiring.

The only wires I have spliced on my ecu is the clutch cut (for no-lift-to-shift, which is optional) for DSMLink, and my front o2 and emergency brake wire for my Apexi TT.

Logging software from datalogger.com or whatever that site is, does not log nearly as much as DSMLink will. PLUS if you own a 2g, which I believe you said you did, you CANNOT log knock with a palm datalogger. With DSMLink you CAN log knock on a 2g. That is an extremely helpful option that I would not live without.

DSMlink all the way. I just got it on my 95 gsx this past Monday, and I can already say that it's the absolute best way I could have spent $600. After getting it in the car and looking through everything, I'm honestly surprised it ONLY costs $600. I'd pay at least $900 for this thing. When it comes to something as important as tuning (especially in high HP applications), I surely would get the best thing I could handle.
