rusty studs staining lug nuts

Hw do I keep my studs from rusting up and staining the inside of my open ended lug nuts?

Maybe spray them with some wd 40 or rust inhibitor.

Vasolene helps keep moisture out so it wont seep through, i know a few that do this and they seem ok with the out come

Pretty simple, don't use open end lug nuts.

Some sanctioning bodies require them and I can tell you, as a tech inspector at various events, I strongly prefer them. Many times I've seen a spacer between the wheel and hub and seriously wondered whether there was enough threading for it to be safe, because it wasn't opened ended so I could not see. But, being an Internet Tiger (tm), I didn't have the requisite body parts to ask the driver to pull a lug. So far, nothing bad has happened. Nothing like this, for example:

Carb cleaner or break cleaner. Works every time! Maybe a wire brush depending on the rust build up

New studs are usually coated. a little grease or anti seize will coat them or your existing ones nicely.

Be sure to apply the WD-40, chassis grease or vaseline to the end of the stud after the lug is torqued tight. Applying these to the threads will reduce the friction force of the lug to the stud. You want to stop water from getting to the end of the stud and causing the rust. Also, as stated above, new wheel studs are coated and will not rust for some time. You can also buy annodized studs if you have the cash $$$$.
