I currently have a 1990 Plymouth Laser 2.0 RS (FWD auto). It has overall been a great and very reliable car, except for one issue: A rusty fuel tank. I know for a fact that this car has spent most of its life sitting around, so I'm not surprised the fuel tank is gross, but it's causing problems. Not only is this loose rust clogging up the fuel filters, it's also clogging up the injectors, which make the car run and sound like a tractor. I have no way of properly cleaning or testing these injectors myself, and I cannot afford to keep buying stupidly expensive injectors every couple months. This fuel tank is most likely the root of the issue, and it has to go.

Idealy, I would love to buy a new or used fuel tank that I know is clean. The problem is, I cant seem to find any place that sells new fuel tanks, and there doesn't seem to be any local junk yards that carry any cars older than 2000 (I am in Southern Ontario by the way). Buying a donor car isn't really an option, since I don't have the money or the space for one.

Does anyone know Where I could possibly get a fuel tank? If not, what are my options?

They are not available new anywhere so, from the replacement perspective, used is your only option. Cleaning up what you have may be your best bet. Here’s a recent thread basically asking the same thing with some experienced members providing advice on how to go about it: 1G Remove rust on fuel tank or throw it away?

Car-part.com shows at least one option in Canada that may be worth checking. You can also post a WTB ad in the Classifieds section here.

Yea, I was thinking cleaning it may be the way to go. Thanks for the help.

The inside of my tank looked horrific. I bought a five gallon bucket of Evaporust, poured it in, let it sit a day on each side/end, drained it, blasted it out with a power washer and it looked nearly new! The bucket of Evaporust was pricey, but it’s re-usable and I’ve used it to clean up a ton of other rusty parts.

Electrolysis is another good way. Tons of vids on YouTube showing how to do it with fuel tanks using a battery charger.

Most of the time rusty tanks look far worse than they really are and can be restored relatively easily.

Alright nice. Thanks for the input. I might go with the Evaporust. I haven't actually seen the inside of the tank yet, but I'm positive that's where the rust is coming from.
