Alright guys, just saved a eclipse from rotting under some1's tree:toobad: and wanted to know how to ""fix"" some rust/holes it had. - The roof top and the hood are rusty not too extreme but just Feels really rough. - Aswell as some really rusty spots, like 1 in the trunk near the glass... i can see to the other side of the trunk! and is just bigger than a nickel. just want to know my options..

The hood and hatch id say just replace with carbon fiber. It would be alot easier then reparing and painting. anywhere else just cut out around the rusted area, tack weld sheet metal behind the area and bondo it in, sand it smooth and paint her. Glad to see another dsm saved, instead of scraped. good luck with it.

I say replace it with the stock hood and hatch.(No offense 4g63and420a just giving my opinion)But i get a good laugh at people with carbon fiber all over there car.I can see the hood being replaced with carbon fiber. But defiantly not the hatch also. That's as bad as them with the carbon fiber fenders and interior inserts.Id rather see a car with no hood, hatch, interior Or fenders.Rather then see a carbon fibered out dsm.Just my input I'm not flaming the carbon fiber guys but it is tacky when you go over bored.

Okay, if your just trying to stop the rust from spreading and your looking for a quick fix just to solve that I have your answer. Just go get some sand paper, and sand it down till you get to the bare metal. Clean it off real nice, and just use some rattle can primer (rustoleum or whatever you can find) and spray that so it contains it.

Other than that, a body shop can fix it for big bucks, or like stated before, just replace them.

Klean Strip makes a good product for stopping rust it's called rust converter (walmart, auto store) it chemically alters the rust to a black primer. It comes in a brushable and spray can form and works good. I used it on several cars with good results. Hope this helps.

Thanx for the ideas... i dont really want to replace the hood and the hatch... i think that would b a waste of money wouldnt it? well can i just knock off all the rust and bondo it? im not sure if you can use that to cover holes... (if not ill just spray it with that rust converter and see what happens...)

Congrats on the save!:rocks: as far as the bondo to cover the hole up, bondo on its own will not do the job, ya gotta have something on the backside for it to stick to. Go to the auto parts store, right next to the bondo you will see what looks like a wire mesh patch, has the bondo brand logo on the front, the wire mesh has a a very strong adhesive on the back side. Basicly dude just clean up the rust, place the patch on the back side of the hole,
apply bondo, sand, feather, prime and paint. This is what I did to shave my rear wiper, not exactly kosher but it works and came out good. ( I know i'm gonna get flamed for this post) hope this helps a bit.

all of these are great ideas (not really sure about the rust converter never heard of it and sounds fishy just my input though)..
the thing you haven't told us is.. how much are you willing to put into it???
the best thing to do is to sand down your surface rust spots, etch prime, prime then paint and clear
as for the rust throughs (like 4g63and420a said) cut out the rust, tack sheet metal behind it, but i would dura glass it, sand, then put regular bondo over it, spot putty (fill pin holes small sand scratches) then prime and paint and clear..

if you could post some pictures that would help us help you..

You could always play around with fiberglass to fill the holes. Nice and messy make sure to wear gloves! I would still suggest you use the rust converter. It's cheap insurance to stop the rust. I helped a body man restore mustangs when I was a teenager and he always used it and never had customers return for poped bondo.
