i assume this head has been sitting for quite some time?
i diddnt know you could get rust on the cam due to the constant contact.
(if the head is being used)
you could get away with scraping it off with a piece of plastic after you soften it up with oil.
(marinate cam in fresh synthetic for about 4 days, the rust will still be pretty rough, but will come off w/o damaging the lobe, you can use fine steel wool also, must make sure you put no grooves in the cam or it will wear unevenly and cause problems,

the absalute best alternative is replace the cams. do them both. also check the surfaces the cam make contact with for wear.:dsm:

WTF holly gwockamoley........just get used one's from the internet, any used cheep one's would be in better condition.i have never seen cam's that rusted, not trying to be rude,i just could not stop looking at the pic.if the cams are that bad the motor cant be to far behind.

get new cams if you wanna go cheap fo to a machine shop and have them micropolished and slap em back in, theyd be fine but i'd go ahead and go aftermarket...

I second getting new cams. I've cleaned up some cams with light rust with just a wire wheel before, but those are pretty bad. Every DSMer should have a set of stock cams laying around since no one buys that stuff anyway.

I got the head from a the pullapart in Charlotte, the head came off of Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra 1.6 and 1.8 and Sonata 2.0 heads are the same as the 4g63's. I got the head cause it was cheap the engine was in good condition it turned easily and had good compression.

This head is not going into a DSM but a CSM(Colt, Summit, Mirage), I'm putting a 2.4 DOHC into my Mirage. I have a 4G64 thats ready to go in the car put decided I want the DOHC head for a little hp boost.

FORGET IT, thoses camshaft are total crap. even if you are able to remove the rust, you will have to gut in the cam lobes to remove it entirely and those lobes will not be in the specs range anymore. get new or used ones that are in better shape.

yeah I agree... The pitting will be terrible with that much rust.... you could use them if you're in a bind, but I would look into some good used ones, as mentioned above

I'm sorry to say but they are right. You need to just replace those. After you would get all of that rust cleaned up. Your valves will not be opening or closing anywhere near they should.

I have the same problem , but mine arent as bad as the ones above. They have just started to rust and i have been soaking them with WD, but i cant just wipe the rust off it off. I bought some used ones but my friend spun the motor over to line up the timing before we took it apart. Do i need to get new rockers or do i just clean then up good?

Well if you decide you want to get another set of cams..

I have a set of stock turbo cams that aren't rusted sitting in my storage. Pulled for my 264/274 combo :)

Sorry, no sale today guys I had already bought some just needed to know if I should get new rockers.
