rpms go up to about 2000 instead of idling at like 800

When I come to a stop sign or a red light and i put my car into neutral, my rpms go up to about 2000 instead of idling at like 800 or so . It doesn't always happen and it started doing that about a week or so ago. Just wondering what that could be.

Also, I heard that if you wait till your gas tank is almost empty, like right about empty, it could harm the fuel injectors. Is that true, if so why?

it doesn't hurt the injectors to terribly bad, but it will hurt the fuel pump. running the pump dry can cause it to go out sooner then it ever would if you keep gas in it. as for the idleing, i'm not really sure about that. sorry i can't help on that one.

My car used to do that also. For me it seemed to be after I would drive an hour or so. My car did it about three times in a week or so then never did it again.

I don't know if these cars have a throttle position sensor but with srt4s they do that all the time. The wiring to the throttle position sensor comes loose. Now I don't know if these cars have tps sensors but thats I know about it. As far as hurting injectors the other guy is right you can hurt the pump not the injectors.

Yea it usually idles weird after I have driven it for like half an hour or so. It just jumps to 2000.

Check your battery cables. I had this issue before in the past on 2 seperate occasions. Both times I re-adjusted and tightend my neg. battery cable (the end that is bolted to the firewall) and it fixed it both times.

No that was't it, tried tightening them, but still happened. any other suggestions

A few possibilities come to mind:

1. Throttle Position Switch adjustment

2. Throttle Position Sensor adjustment

3. Throttle cable screws have come loose and let the cable slip, which can affect the position sensor.

4. Seals in the TB are worn out and causing the shaft to bind a little after it's warm. (Do you have leaks at the shaft seals when you do a boost leak?)

5. Crap in the TB return spring

6. Problems with temperature sensors/switches..causing the ECU to not operate properly after warm-up.

Search for "idle surge" also... not necessarily what you're describing, but similar and lots of good related info out there.

Oh yeah... also do a proper base timing and BISS adjustment.
