I am putting a 90 man transmission in my 91. My 91 was an auto though so I am swapping in the shift lever base and all that. What I want to know is that I notice on the manual (at least the 90) that the cables came out through the firewall and in the 91, the auto cable runs out of the bottom of the console and up underneath the engine bay. I'm pretty sure I have to put that hole through my firewall for the man cables correct? Otherwise the lengths of the cables and whatnot would be off. Can someone verify this?

What's most important is that the cables are held in the bracket on the transmission properly. The length from the bracket to the levers is where the movement of the cables happens. I would try and route them how the manual does it by making the hole. Just be sure not to kink the cables and that they aren't binding after the installation.

I would try and make the hole exact possibly using a drill and a hacksaw blade or a small cutoff disk to make the hole, and even weld a couple of nuts to the firewall to hold the rubber support properly. I don't have any experience doing this swap, but if I were that is how I would do it. Hopefully someone who has done the swap will chime in with what they did.

That's how I was thinking of doing it. I'm going to steal the whole thing from the donor car and try to make an exact copy. There is a spot in the fire stuff on the firewall where it would go through so I know exactly where to put it.

I actually just swapped my car from auto to 5spd last week! When you remove the tcu, you will notice there is the exact shape that you need to cut out from inside the car. It is very easy to do. Note that if you are using 90 tranny in 91 car, you will need the 90 shifter cables as well as proper cable mounting bracket on transmission

Actually you can use 91-94 shifter cables on a 90 last that i read it just makes shifting a little shorter but you will need the whole shifter base and cables if you use other then a 90. But 90 cables will not work on anything but a 90, that is just what i read someone please correct me if im wrong.

On my last talon a few years a ago. I had a 92 with a 90 trans. My 91-94 shift cables would not work with my 91-94 shifter. I had to purchase 90 cables and bracket on trans for them, but i didnt change shifter base. I have never tried to use 91-94 cables in a 90 car though so can't comment on that

I could be wrong but thats just what i remember reading, i beleive what had to be done was the bracket had to be changed along with the base.
