Rounded off flare nut

In my attempts to change all the filters, I found who ever had the car before has rounded off the nut on the bottom of the fuel filter. I have a 93 Eagle Talon ES. Is there any way for me to get this off?

Vice grips...hmm...Anyone else have more ideas in case that don't work.

I know what you need. They're craftsman tools, they're bits the cut into rounded off bolts, just go to sears and ask for the things that get rounded bolts out. For a set of like 6 for 20 bucks, they're the best tools I've bought period.

so your talking about the fitting/hose that bolts onto the fuel filter or one that holds it to the firewall ??

Ah, so you've _already_ destroyed what was left by the ViseGrip method. This is trouble. It's not a place you want to try a Dremel, or other method of sawing. If you've not gotten to the point of leakage, you're probably fine to just close the hood and keep driving for another year or five before it's an issue.

If you _are_ leaking, it may be shop time.

If only BOLT removers could grab a FLARE NUT.



(A flare nut goes around a tube, but it was a well-spirited attempt.)

No it should still work, you just need a bit bit. Or just use a dremel and a can oil wd40 to spray on it from getting hot.

I'm gonna need a picture-- I don't think bolt/nut extractors would work on a flare nut either.

I havn't tryed the vice grips yet, for fear of destroying the rest of the nut. I'm not at the point of leakage yet, but I think I am getting some performance issues, I've had the car for 2 years now and the filter hasn't been changed, I don't know the last time the previous owner changed it either.

If I remove the top connection and the mount bolts, will it work if I turn the filter instead of the nut? I noticed on the new filter its threaded into the bottom, so turning the filter the opposite way than the way the nut goes should work?

I dont think that'll work, the filter + flare nut will just spin. Would help maybe if you could grip that flare nut but thats the problem. Oh well.

Yeah but it may be easier to try to hold the nut still while turning the filter than turning the nut itself

But I thought you said you couldnt get a grip on the flare? I think I know what you're trying to do. You want to hold the flare with grips or something then loosen the filter by hand?
It's worth a try I suppose, but if your fuel line bends or breaks dont blame me.
Seriously, take it to a shop...let them sweat it. And if they destroy it completely Im sure they'll give you a good deal on the repair.
