So I know there are tons of threads on rockauto, as well as threads on CV shafts. But what I really want to know is what is the difference between the 38 dollar CV shaft for my 1g and the 50 dollar one? Are they equivalent in strength? My current CV is absolutely torched and it makes the clickity of death which I've heard is the joint binding which = not good for poor 24 year old transmission.

I thought about buying a used shaft on here but after shipping and everything it'd be more than it costs to buy one brand new. Anyone have any input?

They are all made in China which is why they are so cheap. I would stay away from it and rebuild your factory OEM shaft with parts from Mitsu. The garbage from China will not live and can cause an accident.

If you are refering to the A-1 Cardone one's I used them in my 98 Talon for years. It took the 2.3L mid 300hp no problem. I also have installed literally hundreds of them in customers cars over the years. They are great, no problems and most come with a lifetime warranty. I would have no hesitation putting them in a car. If you are refering to the APWI shafts, there are 2-3 stories of DIY having problems with them and you get what you pay for. Most all parts store carry Cardone reman axles. To say they will break and cause a crash is a bit much. FYI A-1 Cardone's reman. facility is in New Jersey.

I got a brand new "master pro" from Oreily instead so I could look at them in person. It looks just as strong as OE and has revised boots and stuff. The problem I'm having now though is that I don't know how to replace it. My Haynes manual says to go to 10-12 so I do and theres absolutely nothing about replacing the CV there. Is it really hard to do? I have never messed with suspension stuff and I'm afraid I'll screw it up. I thought this would be simple but I don't want to go taking everything apart doing exploratory surgery trying to replace this thing.

I would also recommend taking out a good insurance policy and updating your will.

Looks mean nothing when you are talking about inferior cheap Chinese quality metal.

Just rebuild your OEM unit with parts from Mits. It will be safer, live forever and you will get the additional learning experience from it.

Replacing it is pretty straight forward. You can most likely find picture of how to do it by running a search. All you have to do is unbolt the lower control arm and brake caliper, loosen the retaining nut for the CV shaft and push it out of the assembly. At the trans end, the CV shaft can be popped off with a pry-bar.
