Ok guys I need your help!!! So here's the history I have had my talon for about a year now and for some reason every time it would rain really bad I would rip up my alt. Belt. Ok that wasn't really a big issue belts aren't that very expensive. Now about a week ago it was raining un-Godly bad and yet again I lost the belt. Well I went out and got a new 1 threw it on. It lasted about 3 days and then ripped up. So I changed it. The next day it ripped up another belt. Again I changed it, drove for about 15 minutes and the belt ripped to pieces. Now I'm no moron and I know my fair share about cars, the alt is tight, the belts line up and there is no angle, and both the crank and alt pulley spin free. Now I know what's ripping the belt. The crank pulley has some chips in it but they have been there since I bought the car. My question is what is making the belt slip off the pulley enough to catch the chips and rip it apart????

If the chips come in contact with the belt it sure can tear a belt up. Can you move the crank pulley back and forth? The balancer on my car came apart in my hands on mine. The rubber rots and can cause the pulley to wobble and eventually fall apart.

If he's an NT, then he has the Dodge 420A motor, not the 4G63. The alternator is on the passenger side since the motor is turned 180* around.

If the ALT has an adjuster bolt that is close to the belt, that adjuster belt could be eating up the top of the belt ...

yeah i would put one on and make sure nothings rubbing on it or pushing it off one of the pulleys ( put the belt on and crank the motor by hand with a socket and ratchet on the crank clockwise) if nothing check the tension of the belt make sure its not too tight maybe try a different brand of belt

thanks guys for all the advice but thing is ive tryed all that. yes the crank pully has chips but no it dosnt wiggle slide out or back and forth. ok to the second poster great idea but ive already checked that no way nothing is touchin it if the car is in neutral the belt sits right where it should trust me i layed under there for prfobly 40 mins watching it go round and roung LOL. and as far as hand rotation been there done that like i said everything spins free and nothing rubs im at a loss guys ive got no ideas left.

oh and by the way dsm1g90 u were right it is a 420a but its not a dodge motor. its a mix between the mitsu and CHRYSLER motor the guy before me did some weird stuff to this car. i have AWD brakes conversion done to my FWD N/A

look guys i know whats causing the belt to shred, thats the chips out of the outer crank pully wall, what i cant figure out if why the belt is slipping off the pully enough to catch the chips

why don't you go ahead and replace the crank pulley since it has chips on it? at least solve that part of it so you dont shred anymore belts

Do u have any idea how hard it is to find a nice crank pulley for a cheep price? And I didn't find the issue of why the belts common off only why is rip pin when it dose.

Check the partout section in the classified section. Shouldnt be hard to find one in there

..or, even hit the yards for 2G's with their motors still in them. But, you'll have to take a puller with you since the pulley is pressed on the end of the crankshaft.

..and the reverse when you put it on for it has to be pressed on with a special tool.

Good luck-DSM
