So my car has been in the shop due to bad a leaking rear differential. Got the seals and bearings replaced, but the ring and pinion is messed up and needs to be replaced. I'm guessing due to lack of oil in the differential? Price for a new ring and pinion is about $400. Would it be possible picking up any 2g rear end and using the ring and pinion off of that instead of picking up another? Trying to see what kind of options I have. Thanks in advance!

You would have to take the ring and pinion out of a matching 95-99 AWD 5-speed car. LSD or non-LSD have the same ring and pinion, just there is a difference between automatic vs. manual rear ends for the 2G.

The differences between the non-LSD and the LSD rear differential are the axle inner CV joints and how they engage the differential itself. The LSD rear diff requires one long-stub inner CV joint to engage the viscous coupler and one short-stub inner CV on the other side. The non-LSD rear diff requires two short-stub inner CV joints to engage the open differential. The LSD long-stub inner CV joint will not work in a non-LSD open rear differential.

Hope this helps!
