Hey...my seats are looking pretty nasty so Ive been looking around for some new seats. But unlike most people I actually like the 1g seats a lot and plus new seats cost a lot if you want something thats not from summit:barf: So Ive been thinking about getting my seats reupholstered. Is it worth it, or is the cost so high that I might as well just get new seats??? Has anyone tried this??? Thanks a lot-

I too have a rather ragged looking drivers seat and have been thinking about re-covering it. You say you have delt with katzkin before, what kind of prices were you looking at for a single seat?

Its really easy to reupholster your seat. Simple take the seat out, unclip the rings at the bottom and pull all the thread out of the seams. The cloth pieces should all fall apart. Now trace all the cloth pieces exactly, and line with chalk where the old sewing lines were on the new pieces. take out your mothers sewing machine and go to work. guarantee you will have the most custom seats out there.

Single seat, I don't know. But yea, I think the FULL set is 599 or 699.

Katzkin's will do a single seat. Try contacting them. I asked them to redo my back seat in Sparco fabric and they said they would and to send them the fabric and they will do it. So if they will redo JUST the back seat with fabric they don't normally use, then I bet they will redo your single front seat. They are very nice too.

agreed. check the local shops, i'm better from my local experiances here, around 500-600 range.

but also, look for smaller "ma & pa" upholstery shops. they usually take a little longer, but the quality of work is just as good and usually a LOT cheaper too. i had my entire rear seat (upper & lower) redone by a retired lady that does upholstery on the side for $75, and i supplied the fabric. quality is about 99% of what the shop across town wanted $250 for. was it worth it... HELL YES! took about 3 weeks vs 1 week, but for $175 less, i can deal with that.

I thought about doing this. I figure, if it doesn't work then it's only the time and cost of fabric. Napkinthief, have you really done this and seen the results? I'm sure with the number of DIY'ers in here, someone would try and see how the results are. Could be worth it for a pain-glutton like me (about to try to put on my own tint, too).

I honestly wouldn't suggest trying it by yourself. If you're new to sewing you might get confused on how to sew it together. I'm learning boat/car uppholstery as an apprentinceship.

Well, I called an upholstery shop just for a quick quote. $700 for the seats (can't remember one or both, just froze up at the number), just to reupholster stock seats. I may be able to find other places cheaper, but I kinda lost steam after that one.

So it's either 1) waste time on sewing something myself, or 2) buy cheapo knockoff "race" seats from checker/krager auto. I don't mind wasting time, it's part of the fun of trying to DIY vs. just pay everyone else to do it. The only bad thing is destroying the stock cloth.

might as well buy some $300 knock-off race seats off Ebay or something, and save your stock ones just in case...

Yeah. Great weather, horrible parts costs. Go figure. I'll probably just leave it for now, it's got a slight rip but I've got tons more to worry about (AC, rattling windows, turbo upgrade...)
