[RESOLVED] rear main seal fix

I recently found out that my rear main seal is leaking. Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace this or if I should just do it myself.

the seal is like only 7 bucks, but the trans has to be dropped to do it.yesterday i took out a fwd tranny, put new clutch fork pivot ball in, and the whole job took me like 2 1/2 hours. by myself. but i also had a engine hoist to lift the trans in to place. so to answer your question, a shop will prob charge like 300 to do, but you would be better off doing it yourself

If I am going to drop the trans I might as well just do a 5 spd swap

You can remove the tranny from the bottom without a hoist. The hoist just makes it easier. Search around for "removing tranny"...there are a lot of posts on different ways of going about it.

BTW - There is a lot more to doing a 5 speed swap (I assume you mean going from auto to manual) than just dropping and reinstalling the existing tranny. You basically have to remove the dash to install a pedal assembly, as well as the clutch cylinders and plumbing.

And while I have the trans out I might as well build the engine. I can get parts from manley for a very cheap price soo..

Since it seemed like you didn't know the tranny had to come out to get to the rear main seal and how to remove it, I thought that maybe you weren't aware of what it takes for the swap.
