OK when i pulled into my driveway today i realized some oil on the ground around where my oil filter is. So i lifted the car and could see the oil dripping from the filter and the oil cooler. So when i moved it a little both the filter and the oil cooler were loose. The oil cooler wasn't that loose but i was lucky to catch it when i did, the oil filter was maybe a day away from falling completely off. I read the thread for this saying i need to tighten the oil cooler bolt(but not too tight). My question is can i remove the oil filter and tighten the bolt without doing a whole oil change. Its a 98 GST and i use OEM filters with Royal Purple 20w50 oil. Oh i hand tightened the filter as much as i could and everything seemed good and tight(nothing was moving at all any more)

Thanks:dsm:

I had the same thing happen to me. The answer would be no. You will have to completely remove the oil filter and you are going to lose alot of oil from the housing. The big bolt inside the cooler where the oil flter attaches to actually comes loose and you need to tighten it up.

Well technically some oil will still remain in the oil pan. If you let it sit for a day, most of the oil will drain back into the pan and not TOO much will come out of the oil filter housing. Obviously you will have to replenish what came out.

I had the same problem with my talon. I tightened the bolt and it worked for a few days. Then it would just come loose again and start spitting oil. I ended up having to replace the whole housing. I hope you have better luck!

The car will be sitting for over 15 hours before i remove the filter, also i read that i should remove the bolt, clean it put some thread lock on it and then put it all back together good and tight(but not to tight)
