Ok, so I'm alittle pee'd. I bought a transmission for $600 and it only has 74000km on it. Put it in my car and now it doesn't shift into 5th? Please help there's a banging noise when it try's to engage, I havent tried it with the car running, it's not even filled with oil. If you need anymore info ask pls I'm really to irritated to think of anything else needed...

Sounds like it could be the 5th gear nut. Grab a 36mm socket, 12mm socket, extension, rubber mallet, 1/8th tube of RTV and remove the end case (the part nearest the passenger side wheel well). You might have to remove the plastic fender wall to get to it. Once you have the case off take a look at the top gear (this is 5th gear, the one below it is reverse). Check to make sure the nut on the shaft holding the gear on isn't loose. If it is torque it down to 110 ft-lbs. You can stuff a rag between the gears to hold them while you torque it, or you can put the car into two gears at once, I've also heard sticking a penny there will work too. If you have any fluid in the transmission you wont after you take the end case off. I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the nut. The proper way to keep the nut on after it's been torqued properly is to dent the ring on the nut in to the slots on the shaft it rests upon, this will make more sense when you see it.

That nut is on there effin' tight brand new rebuilt transaxle. I've already taken the fifth gear cover off everything appears to be fine. I'm going to pull the transmission once again so i can get a good look at it.

Okay so it had a bump coming off the engine not much but i dropped it(not very far at all. Obviously enough to knock something outta place. help much? thought i would come out with that my bad :S

make sure the backup light switch has a washer under it, if it doesn't it will block you from shifting into 5th.
