Last week I was able to pick up my first dsm, A 91 talon tsi AWD from its orginal owner. The car has 69,740 original miles and I have to say driving this thing is the most fun I have had in a long time. Just was wondering where I should start with the mods this car is bone stock.

Umm, i would start with exhaust, then boost controller, then the supporting mods. Theres plenty of threads out there, so you can get an idea what to do. Keep in mind the "search button" with be your friend with your new dsm, trust me on that one.

personally i would start with some of the free mods that are listed on this site. One of the free mods is to remove the air box. This will help you some. you can also take off the elbow on the throttle body and grind down the little lip that is inside. this will smooth out the air flow. Also take your PCV and unhook in from you intake pipe as this puts oil in your intercooler and decreases efficancy. Put a fuel filter in the line and it will catch all of the oil. THose are just a few cheap/ free mods that will get you startyed down the road to a fast er DSM.

first off congrates dude welcome to the dsm world LOL. Frist things i would do are 3''exhaust system, intake or a 2g Mass are flow sesnser swap or take off the air box and clamp on a K&N filter. so your car can breath better. i did both of those and u can notice a big dif in power and it will gain u PSI. im running 15PSI now without a boost countroller. after those get a boost gage fule pump and then boost countroller then maybe a better Jpipe for dat 14B you got there or just do all intercooler piping and frount mount. some of the best first things to do right there. Hope dis helps.

but remeber intake and exhaust are a must it will let your motor flow better all around and lets the turbo work easyer and less stressed out

yay to people that don't make good suggestions. before doing ANY modifications to the car, make sure you have ways of monitoring your changes. ie a datter logger and boost gauge.

take a look at the tech section on where to get started.

Hello and welcome. DSMs can almost be more work than they're worth; unless you find that rare low-mileage, well-maintained diamond-in-the-rough. Good luck and have fun!

First when it comes to your DSM, knowing how to search the forums is a more powerful tool than any in your toolbox. So with that said before modding, check the basics first, belts, plugs, fluids, hoses, compression. Also at nearly 70k does that mean the t-belt was changed less than 10k ago or is it overdue? It is all listed in the first link below.

Once that's taken care of do the free mods. Boost controller is aften a early choice, be sure you have all the proper warning gauges first. Remember even though your car has low mileage, the electrical system will age based on hours of operation and years from manufacture and, for example, your fuel system may not be up to the task of increased boost. The same goes for all things rubber.

An excellent guide on where to start can be found in the tech section of DSMtuners or right here:
Increasing horsepower on a 1G turbo

Also this link is a must have for all DSMers, I've been using it for about 8 years now. It is incredibly informative and helpful. You will also find "1000 Already Answered Questions" Look for it there before you post it here:

welcome to dsm :thumb: a 91 talon awd with only 70k original miles?? rare find there. before doing mods i suggest to make sure all maintinence is up to date and do some reading up as this can prevent many mistakes that have been performed in the past. my first mods were a k&n air filter and an upper intercooler piping. but just remember theres a difference between knowing what your doing and thinking you know what your doing and good luck :D

Yeah I guess so, the boost gauge should be the first thing you should buy after you buy any turbo car that your going to mod.

Go over the car with a fine tooth comb, Make sure the supenison brakes and the hole drive train is up to snuff before modding.:thumb:

Good luck, You will have fun but sometimes you will be ready to pull out your HAIRROFL

whats up man, good luck with your first one. the first thing i did to mine was a turbo timer perfect first move. keep in touch i see your located in poukeepsie i am in middletown. if you some parts let me know also i have a garAGE FULL. LATER MAN:dsm:

welcome to the dsm community first of all.

to start out i just got mine and it is a great fun car.

my sugestion to you would be to do all the maintence things to the car meaning timing belt and fluids. also some of the sensors. go over all the hoses for any cracks. (make a boost leak tester http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html)

i would start of making the car to where it is going to run real strong befor modding it. since the car has 70,000 miles almost it is 10,000 over for the timing belt and if you neglect that you will have at least $2000 into a head rebuild.

after you do all the maintence stuff do the free mod section in the tech article section then work to stage 1 mods and so on.

as far as mods go what are your goals with this car?

have fun and be smart with what you do to the car and dont cut corners on it.

ey... if you dont mind me asking,, how much did you get your talon for??
as for where you might wanna start:
1. free mods
2. exhaust (2.5" all the way)
3. intake (filter, lower and upper IC pipe, bov)
4. boost gauge and manual boost controller
5. turbo (16g,18g and up)

thanks alot for all of the tips I am definately gona start with the exhaust and intake but also found the car is do for a timing belt, it has been 5 years since it has been done. I will be posting pics of the car this week. Thanks again
