Edmonton,
I am in the midst of getting rid of my power steering and putting in a 1.8 laser manual steering rack. I also have a punishment racing FMIC and have got rid of my A/C. Has anyone else done both these things and if so what was required?

Thanks in advance for any input.:hellyeah:

Lots of people have done this. Pull out your a/c stuff, discharge your a/c the proper way. Swap steering racks and be done.

I'm talking about belts and pullys, do i need to put an idler where the P/S pully was? how long of a belt do i use?
Remove the pulleys from the water pump using the (4) mounting bolts, discard the rear (V-groove) pulley, and reinstall the larger front 4-groove serpentine pulley by itself.

You'll only have one belt- it will be the 39" 4-groove serpentine (Dayco part number 5040390) and it will run from the crank drive the water pump and alternator.

This was done on my car before I got it and they just filled the rack, cut the lines and brazed them shut. It steers fine, I can't feel any bubbles or anything. I would like to have ac though, it's not putting drag on the engine like ps does.

popular weight savings. the rack should be straight forward , as for the ac pull it all out condensor and all then get the belt from the above post. you just shaved probally 75-100lbs. good luck partner.

I wasnt getting rid of my A/C so when i had my eprom chipped mine cuts out at 5K WOT until RPMs go back down.

Is there an option for the 2g awd model? Anyone know if we can put a diffrant rack in and from what car?

Thanks Jim

P.s. not trying to steal your thread, pm me please.

No manual rack for a 2g. unless you go custom fabrication.

Is this type of thing worth the weight savings? Seems like it would be a pain to daily drive a car with no ps. Do you guys who do this mostly race your cars?

My last car I drove for a whole year with the same fluid w/ the lines looped and had no problems at all even at a stand still turning the wheel isnt hard at all. We are men to turn a wheel should be nothing LOL.

Haha I guess your right, It just seems like a lot of extra effort IF the car is a daily driver.

It's worth it just for getting at the exhaust manifold nut. Take the belt off and drive around for a while, you'll like it. At least, you won't mind it.

Hmm, thats interesting, I have driven cars with failing ps pumps before and it was a very unpleasant experience, maybe they just had more weight in the front.
