2G Replacing inner tie rod

I can't find anything about replacing an inner tie-rod end on a 2g. Does anyone have any tips on doing it? Also, will the Harbour Freight inner tie rod tool to remove the inner tie rod? Harbor Freight Tools

You can rent an inner tie rod end tool anywhere, I've rented one from autozone and Napa before. You need to get the inner tie rod end tool and a saginaw. The saginaw from autozone is too big for the mitsubishi inner tie rod end (I ended up sticking a screw in there to wedge it), otherwise the NAPA tool has a bolt that you can tighten down on to the inner tie rod end.

A pipe wrench worked just fine for me. Or just rent the one from napa that "Timechg" mentioned!

What is a saginaw? I didn't even think of renting the tool thank you for the suggestion. Is there a write up of the process at all? It seems quite straight forward except I don't see why I would need a pipe wrench or anything other than the Inner Tie Rod tool. Also, the engine will be out of the car when I replace the inner tie rod which I don't think will make much of a difference.

You don't need a pipe wrench. I was simply informing you that you don't necessarily need the inner tie rod tool to do the job. I used a pipe wrench because I didn't want to rent the tool and that was what I had in the garage. It worked just fine! And as for the write up, I would hope that you have a manual of some sort. Whether it be a Chilton's or Haynes, they both have detailed instructions!

I do have a Haynes manual but for the life of me I can't find anything inner tie rod related in there. I need to go back through it. Either way, has anyone used a new inner tie-rod that was non-oem like the ones from rock auto or advance auto? I just don't want to mess around in the steering department.

Excellent! Thank You. Does anybody have any experience with inner tie rods from vendors other than OEM? I am thinking of getting some from RockAuto but I don't want to mess around in the steering department.

Get the OEM. A few years ago when I did mine I used Moog tie rods and in very short order I had to replace them twice. Put in an OEM one and 10 years later it is still good.

Can I ask why you cant find a big wrench that fits the inner rod and just try loosening it that way? I know this is a old thread but I am thinking about replacing mine cause its not bad but needs replaced.

Its not exactly easy to fit a wrench in the area of the inner tie rod.
