Ok i searched and checked out vfaq on this one before posting. I looked underneath my car and the rubber ring in my carrier bearings are shot. I dont need a whole driveshaft rebuild with lobro joints, etc, i just need to change the bearings. Vfaq says that the whole rebuild is a pain in the a$$ but how difficult is it for just the bearings? This will be done in the driveway with hand tools.:coy:

Tell me if this doesn't work I'm on a hard to use device.

^^Get em from JNZTuning! I got an entire rebuild kit from them for my driveshaft. Its not too bad a job to rebuild the shaft, provided youve got a press and other tools to do it. I tore mine down, sand blasted it and primed, painted and clear coated the shafts before reassembling, looks pretty nice but I was rebuilding the entire car from the ground up at the time, which isnt something all of us are interested in doing.

Thats my only concern. Ill be using hand tools and wont have a press

Yeah I'll get it from them. That where I got all of my OEM stuff. What did it cost you for the whole rebuild kit? Did you have to get the drive shaft rebalanced?

Well have a shop do the work you cant if you cant get a press. At least press them for you. I just had mine done, I didn't want to mess with it. Feels better and grab some torque solution bushings cheap part to replace the factory worn ones.

Yeah man i just may do that. I could get the gear puller but the press is a tall order. This is one of those jobs i dont want to bother with if i can help it. Ill make a decision in a month or so since its down for other repairs.

You can use a big c clamp and sockets to press out the u joints if you have to, its not that bad, a press just makes it quicker and smoother. The full rebuild kit cost me around 280.00 or so at the time. I marked all my drive shaft pieces with a letter punch before disassembly so that I could put it back together the same way it came apart to avoid having to rebalance, though getting it checked wouldnt hurt Im sure.

Ok cool. Now did that $280 include the U-joints?

JNZ has the full rebuild kit right now for like 332.00 for 1gs.

How long did it take you to do using the c clamp and socket method? I saw it in the vfaq as an option. I would prefer to do it myself for the experience but it looks like a pita

I only did one U joint with the c clamp cause the press was occupied. It was my very first U joint, and it seemed to be a pain, but once I got one side out, I got the hang of it. The press is stupid easy, the only trick is to make sure youre squarely set on the caps when youre pushing em out.

here you go. Socket and jaws. Not to bad.

I need to do mine as well, they look pretty worn. When I'm coasting with the car in gear, the car makes a slight rattling noise. It doesn't do it when the clutch is in or the car is coasting in neutral.

That's the carrier bearings, right?

Where does the rattle sound like its coming from on the veh? Mine doesnt have a rattle, i noticed because i was under the car changing the oil pan and looked at the driveshaft:hmm:

It's definitely coming from the rear half of the car. I found another thread here with the exact same problem that said it was his wheel bearings, so I'm not sure what's causing the noise.
