I'm under the impression that the charcoal canister is used for storing exhaust/fumes/gasses and it's a part of the emission systems. It's kind of clunky and I was wondering if removing it will have ANY adverse effect on the integrity/performance of the vehicle? I know it's a vital part at smog time, but I have that covered.

As far as i know it won't affect a thing. With some aftermarket intakes there is no port for it so it's not used. I've seen people remove them before and it didn't affect anything so go for it if your not concerned about emissions.

I wouldn't be so quick to remove it, if I were you. On my 1G, the gas tank is vented into the charcoal canister as well. That allows for expansion of the gas and fumes in your tank, for example, on a hot day. Without the canister, where are you going to vent those fumes? If you vent them to atmosphere, your car is going to smell like gasoline and you will have to have a serious "No Smoking" zone enforced around it. It you plug it off, your tank will build pressure. It's something to think about...

yes the gas tank does vent there but if you remove the canister just cut a section of the hos and its angled toward the ground so the fumes go out under the car.... i dont have problems with smelling gas at anytime in mine and thats exactly how my car is...

Sounds cool, I'm just thinking-does the gas tank need a vacuum? Or is a mere "dump tube" sufficient for removing all that built up pressure? I live in NorCal, it's never really hot out here. As for all the vacuum lines that lead to the canister, can I just plug them? I'm assuming that having this canister removed will help emissions (besides the visual inspection aspect) due to the cleaner air that runs through the intake-am I correct?

It definitely will NOT help lower emissions. Dumping raw gas fumes into the air is (apparently) one of the worst things you can do. Those fumes usually get fed back into your engine for burning, or are absorbed by the charcoal in the canister.
That said, I don't believe it will raise tailpipe emissions either, to remove it. It will just raise the pollution from dumping raw gas fumes directly into the atmosphere (which is a big no-no :nono: )

When I was speaking of emissions, I was referring to a SMOG check. I should have specified/used different terminology. I'm not trying to destroy our already mutilated atmosphere...

the only thing that you gain by taking it out is a few punds and less clutter in the engine bay, taking it out will not affect anything what so ever, except the fact that the gas tank when under pressure from heat will let the sent of gas get into the atmosphere but you wont be able to smell it in the car because it isnt anywhere near the ventalation system at all.....
